1. The Four Pillars of Ablution

Source text أَرْكَانُ الْوُضُوءِ أَرْبَعَةٌ، وَهِيَ فَرَائِضُهُ... • The Four Pillars: In the Hanafi school, there are four absolute obligations (Arkan) in performing Wudu. Omitting any of them invalidates the purification. • Definition of Washing: Washing (Ghusl) legally requires that at least two drops of water flow and run over every part of the washed limb. Simply wiping a wet hand (Mas'h) is invalid for washed limbs. • These four obligations are decisively established by the Quranic verse of Wudu in Surah al-Ma'idah.

2. Obligation 1: Washing the Face

Source text الْأَوَّلُ: غَسْلُ الْوَجْهِ، وَحَدُّهُ طُولًا مِنْ مَبْدَأِ سَطْحِ الْجَبْهَةِ إِلَى أَسْفَلِ الذَّقْنِ، وَعَرْضًا مَا بَيْنَ شَحْمَتِي الْأُذُنَيْنِ • Face Boundary (Length-wise): From the normal hairline at the top of the forehead to the bottom of the chin (asfal al-daqn). • Face Boundary (Width-wise): From one earlobe to the other earlobe (ma bayna shahmati al-udhunayn). • Strict Requirement: Every single pore and skin surface within these physical boundaries must be completely wet; leaving any spot dry invalidates Wudu.

3. Obligation 2: Washing Both Arms to Elbows

Source text وَالثَّانِي: غَسْلُ يَدَيْهِ مَعَ مِرْفَقَيْهِ • Including the Elbows: Washing both arms from the fingertips up to and including the elbows is obligatory. • The Legal Particle "Ma'a": In Hanafi jurisprudence, the preposition "with" (ma'a) indicates that the elbows themselves are included in the mandatory washed boundary. • Special Details: If a tight ring is worn on the finger, it must be moved or rotated to ensure water reaches the skin beneath. Any dirt under long nails must not prevent water from saturating the area.

4. Obligation 3: Wiping a Quarter of the Head

Source text وَالرَّابِعُ: مَسْحُ رُبْعِ رَأْسِهِ • Definition of Mas'h: Passing a wet hand or wet fingers over a limb without flowing water. • The Obligatory Volume: Wiping at least one-quarter (1/4th) of the head is mandatory. • Physical Measurement: This obligatory quarter-head area is physically equivalent to the flat surface area of a single hand palm. • Fresh Water Rule: The hand used for wiping must be wet; if the hand is dry or only damp from washing previous limbs, fresh water must be taken.

5. Obligation 4: Washing Both Feet to Ankles

Source text وَالثَّالِثُ: غَسْلُ رِجْلَيْهِ مَعَ كَعْبَيْهِ • Including the Ankles: Washing both feet from the tips of the toes up to and including the ankles is obligatory. • The Ankles (al-Ka'bayn): These refer to the protruding bones on the lateral and medial sides of each foot; they are included in the mandatory washed boundary. • Saturing the Joins: Water must penetrate deep between the toes and folds, as this area is highly prone to remaining dry.
