1. The Cause & Rulings of Wudu

Source text سَبَبُ الْوُضُوءِ: اسْتِبَاحَةُ مَا لَا يَحِلُّ إِلَّا بِالطَّهَارَةِ كَالصَّلَاةِ، وَحُكْمُهُ الْأُخْرَوِيُّ الثَّوَابُ، وَالدُّنْيَوِيُّ اسْتِبَاحَةُ الصَّلَاةِ • The Cause of Wudu: The legal cause (Sabab) for Wudu is the desire to make lawful those acts of worship that are otherwise forbidden without purification (such as performing prayer or touching the Quran). • Worldly Ruling: It permits the legal performance of prayer, circumambulating the Ka'bah, and touching the Quranic script. • Afterlife Ruling: Performing this physical purification with sincerity earns spiritual reward (al-Thawāb) in the Hereafter.

2. Conditions of Obligation - Part 1

Source text وَشَرْطُ وُجُوبِهِ: الْعَقْلُ، وَالْبُلُوغُ، وَالْإِسْلَامُ... • Defining Conditions of Obligation: These are the physical and legal requirements that must exist in an individual before Wudu is deemed legally mandatory (Fard) upon them: ◦ Sanity (al-'Aql): Wudu is not mandatory upon an insane person. ◦ Puberty (al-Bulūgh): Children who have not reached puberty are exempt from the obligation of Wudu. ◦ Islam (al-Islām): Wudu is not demanded from non-Muslims as a prerequisite during their state of disbelief.

3. Conditions of Obligation - Part 2

Source text وَقُدْرَةٌ عَلَى اسْتِعْمَالِ الْمَاءِ الْكَافِي، وَوُجُودُ الْحَدَثِ، وَعَدَمُ الْحَيْضِ وَالنِّفَاسِ، وَضِيقُ الْوَقْتِ • Further Conditions of Obligation: Wudu is only mandatory when the following elements are present: ◦ Ability to Use Water: Physical and legal access to a sufficient volume of purifying water. ◦ Presence of Ritual Impurity (Wujūd al-Hadath): The person must already be in a state of minor ritual impurity. ◦ Absence of Menstruation/Lochia: The woman must not be menstruating (Hayd) or bleeding post-natally (Nifās), during which Wudu is not requested. ◦ Time Constraint (Dīq al-Waqt): The start of the prayer time, or its narrowness such that the prayer will be missed if purification is delayed.

4. The Three Conditions of Validity

Source text وَشَرْطُ صِحَّتِهِ ثَلَاثَةٌ: عُمُومُ الْبَشَرَةِ بِالْمَاءِ الطَّهُورِ، وَانْقِطَاعُ مَا يُنَافِيهِ... • Defining Conditions of Validity: These are the physical realities that must be maintained during Wudu for the act to be legally correct and accepted: ◦ Encompassing the Entire Skin ('Umūm al-Basharah): Saturating the entire skin of the washed limbs with purifying water. If a needlepoint space remains dry, the Wudu is invalid. ◦ Cessation of Invalidating Actions (Inqitā' mā yunāfī): The absence of any active, invalidating emissions (such as active bleeding or dripping of urine) while performing Wudu. ◦ Removal of Barriers: Eliminating physical coatings (like wax, grease, or paint) that isolate the skin from water contact.
