Lesson
1. Invalidators of Wudu: Excretions from the Two Pathways
Source text يَنْقُضُ الْوُضُوءَ مَا خَرَجَ مِنَ السَّبِيلَيْنِ إِلَّا رِيحَ الْقُبُلِ فِي الْأَصَحِّ • The Legal Effect: When Wudu is broken, a state of minor ritual impurity (Hadath Asghar) is established. One is not permitted to perform prayer or touch the Quran without a fresh ablution. • The Two Pathways (al-Sabilayn): The urinary/reproductive tract (front pathway) and the anus (back pathway). Anything that exits from these two orifices breaks Wudu (e.g., urine, stool, gas, moisture, worms). • The Exception: ◦ Front-Pathway Wind (Rih al-Qubul): Wind exiting from the front pathway (urinary tract) in both men and women does NOT invalidate Wudu according to the most correct Hanafi opinion.
2. Invalidator 2: Flowing Filth from Wounds
Source text وَنَجَاسَةٌ سَائِلَةٌ مِنْ غَيْرِهِمَا كَدَمٍ وَقَيْحٍ • The Flowing Condition (Sailan): If physical filth (such as blood, pus, or serum) exits from any part of the body other than the two pathways, it invalidates Wudu only if it flows to an area that must be washed in purification. • Specific Examples: ◦ If blood merely appears on the surface of a wound (like a needlepoint) but remains on its spot without moving, Wudu is NOT broken. ◦ If the blood moves and flows beyond its point of exit to an area that must be washed in purification, Wudu is broken.
3. Blood in Saliva & Repeated Wiping of Wounds
Source text وَدَمٌ غَلَبَ عَلَى الْبُزَاقِ أَوْ سَاوَاهُ... وَعَفْوُ رَشَاشِ الدَّمِ • Blood Mixed in Saliva: ◦ If the saliva color turns red or orange, it indicates that blood dominates or is equal in volume to the saliva; Wudu is broken. ◦ If the saliva color remains yellow, it indicates that saliva dominates and the blood is minimal; Wudu is NOT broken. • Wiping Emerging Blood Repeatedly: If a person continuously wipes away emerging blood with a tissue, the legal ruling evaluates potential: if the blood would have flowed had it not been wiped, Wudu is broken.
4. Invalidator 3: Vomiting filling the mouth
Source text وَقَيْءُ طَعَامٍ أَوْ مَاءٍ أَوْ مِرَّةٍ إِذَا مَلَأَ الْفَمَ • Mouthful Vomit (Mil' al-Fam): Legally defined as that which cannot be retained in the mouth except with extreme difficulty. If it fills the mouth, Wudu is broken, whether it consists of food, water, or bile. • Combining Small Recurrent Vomits: ◦ If a person vomits multiple small amounts, they are combined if the underlying wave of nausea and cause (Ittihad al-Sabab) remained constant. ◦ If the combined volume of these small episodes equals a mouthful, Wudu is invalidated. • Vomiting phlegm (Balgham) does NOT break Wudu, regardless of the volume, according to the preferred Hanafi position.
5. Summary of Flowing Impurities and Excretions
• The Legal Principle: The core trigger for these first three invalidators (excretions, flowing blood, vomit) is the exit of physical filth (Najasah) from the body. • Whenever filth exits and flows beyond its point of origin, or is expelled as a mouthful of vomit, ritual purity is lost. • In the next level, we will study the remaining nine invalidators (such as sleep, fainting, laughter in prayer, and gross skin contact).
Practice questions
Question 1
Under which condition does bleeding from a cut on the hand invalidate Wudu in the Hanafi school?
- As soon as the blood is visible on the surface.
- Only if the cut is deeper than 1 cm.
- If the blood flows beyond the boundaries of the wound.
- Bleeding from wounds never breaks Wudu.
Question 2
Wind exiting from the front pathway (urinary tract) in both men and women invalidates Wudu according to the most correct Hanafi opinion.
Question 3
Sort the following scenarios into "Wudu is Broken" and "Wudu is Valid" according to Noor-ul-Idah:
Question 4
If a person vomits small amounts of bile multiple times in a single session due to the same wave of nausea, these are combined to evaluate mouthful wudu invalidation.
Question 5
What color of saliva indicates that blood is equal or dominant, thus invalidating Wudu?
- Yellow.
- White.
- Red or orange.
- Green.
Question 6
If a wound emerges blood, and a person wipes it with a tissue repeatedly before it can flow, the wudu remains valid because no blood actually flowed.
Question 7
Match the physical excretions with their correct impact on Wudu:
Question 8
Why does vomiting phlegm (Balgham) NOT break Wudu, even if it is a mouthful?
- Because phlegm is considered pure and not a filth (Najasah) in Hanafi law.
- Because phlegm comes from the pathways.
- Only if the wudu was made with seawater.
- Because the volume of phlegm cannot be measured.
