1. Invalidator 5: Sleep and Buttocks Stability

Source text وَنَوْمٌ لَمْ تَتَمَكَّنْ فِيهِ الْمَقْعَدَةُ مِنَ الْأَرْضِ • The Principle: Sleep itself is not physical filth; rather, it is a state of relaxed muscular and sensory control where the passage of flatulence is highly probable. • Non-Invalidating Sleep: ◦ If a person sleeps sitting with both buttocks firmly seated on the ground (Tamakkun al-Maq'adah), their Wudu is NOT broken. • Invalidating Sleep: ◦ Sleeping lying on one's side, flat on one's back, or while in a prostrating posture. ◦ Sleeping while leaning against a pillow or wall such that if the support were removed, the sleeper would fall.

2. Invalidators 6, 7 & 8: Unconsciousness, Insanity, and Intoxication

Source text وَإِغْمَاءٌ، وَجُنُونٌ، وَسُكْرٌ • Al-Ighma' (Fainting): A temporary loss of consciousness due to illness or physical weakness. This breaks Wudu because sensory control is completely lost. • Al-Junun (Insanity): Mental instability that deprives a person of legal discernment and sensory control, invalidating Wudu. • Al-Sukr (Intoxication): Reaching a state of inebriation through any substance where the person staggers while walking and loses control of their cognitive faculties. This breaks Wudu.

3. Invalidator 9: Loud Laughter in Prayer containing Bowing & Prostration

Source text وَقَهْقَهَةُ بَالِغٍ يَقْظَانَ فِي صَلَاةٍ ذَاتِ رُكُوعٍ وَسُجُودٍ وَلَوْ تَعَمَّدَ الْخُرُوجَ بِهَا مِنَ الصَّلَاةِ • Al-Qahqahah (Loud Laughter): Laughing loud enough that nearby worshippers can hear the sound. • Invalidation of both Wudu and Salah: If a person laughs aloud in prayer, both their prayer and wudu are invalidated, provided: ◦ The laugher is an adult (Baligh). ◦ The laugher is fully awake (Yaqthan). ◦ The prayer contains bowing and prostration ( ذات ركوع وسجود). • Even if the person intentionally laughed with the exact motive of exiting the prayer, their Wudu is still broken.

4. Exceptions to the Loud Laughter Invalidation

• Funeral & Recitation Prostrations: ◦ If a person laughs aloud during the Funeral Prayer (Janazah) or the Prostration of Recitation (Sajdah al-Tilawah), that specific act of worship is invalidated, but their Wudu remains valid. ◦ Juristic Reason: Because these acts do not contain actual bowing (Ruku') and prostration (Sujud), the strict wudu-breaking rule of Qahqahah is not triggered. • Children and Sleepers: ◦ If a child laughs aloud in prayer, or if a person laughs while asleep during prayer, their Wudu is NOT broken.

5. Invalidator 10: Gross Skin Contact of Private Parts

Source text وَمَسُّ فَرْجٍ بِفَرْجٍ بِلا حَائِلٍ • Al-Mubasharah al-Fahishah: Direct, skin-to-skin contact between the private parts of two individuals (male and female, or same-sex) with sexual arousal and without any physical barrier (Ha'il). • The Ruling: This contact invalidates the Wudu of both parties, even if no ejaculation or emission of fluid occurs. • The Barrier (Ha'il): If there is a fabric between them that prevents the transfer of body heat and skin moisture, the Wudu remains intact. • Core Hanafi Principle: Simply touching one's own private parts or touching a woman's skin does NOT break Wudu.

6. Invalidators 11 & 12: Childbirth without Blood

Source text وَوِلَادَةٌ مِنْ غَيْرِ رُؤْيَةِ دَمٍ • Childbirth without Blood: If a woman gives birth and absolutely no post-natal blood is visible (an extremely rare medical scenario): • The Ruling: Her Wudu is invalidated by the act of childbirth. • Details: Since no blood was observed, the state of Nifas (post-natal bleeding) is not established, meaning Ghusl is not legally required; only a fresh Wudu must be performed to pray. • Hanafi invalidators of Wudu revolve around the exit of physical filth from the body or the total relaxation of mental and sensory control.

7. Summary: The Twelve Invalidators of Wudu

• We have now studied the complete map of the twelve invalidators of Wudu: ◦ Anything exiting from the two pathways. ◦ Flowing filth (blood/pus) from other than the pathways. ◦ Blood dominating saliva. ◦ Vomiting mouthful of food/water/bile. ◦ Sleep without buttocks firmly seated on the ground. ◦ 6–8. Fainting, insanity, severe intoxication. ◦ Loud laughter by an awake adult during a bowing/prostrating prayer. ◦ Gross skin contact of private parts (al-Mubasharah al-Fahishah). ◦ 11-12. Childbirth without visible blood.
