Lesson

1. Legal Status of Adhan and Iqamah

سُنَّ الأَذَانُ وَالإِقَامَةُ سُنَّةً مُؤَكَّدَةً لِلْفَرَائِضِ وَلَوْ مُنْفَرِدًا أَدَاءً أَوْ قَضَاءً سَفَرًا أَوْ حَضَرًا لِلرِّجَالِ • Fundamental Ruling: Calling the Adhan and the Iqamah for the five obligatory daily prayers is classified as Sunnah Mu'akkadah (emphasized Prophetic practice) for men. • Broad Application: This Sunnah Mu'akkadah status applies strictly under all conditions: ◦ Whether the prayer is being performed on time (Ada') or made up after its time has expired (Qada'). ◦ Whether the worshipper is traveling (Safar) or resident at home (Hadar). ◦ Whether performing the prayer in a congregational mosque or praying completely alone (Munfarid) at home. • Restricted to Men: This emphasizes practice is designated strictly for male worshippers; it is not a Sunnah for women.

2. Disapproved Scenarios & Legisative Boundaries

وَكَرِهَا لِلنِّسَاءِ... وَلَا يُشْرَعُ لِغَيْرِ الْفَوَائِتِ وَالْخَمْسِ • Disapproval for Women: Calling the Adhan and Iqamah for women-only congregations is classified as legally disliked (Makruh). • Legislative Boundaries: The Adhan and Iqamah are not legislated or permitted for any prayers other than the five obligatory daily prayers and their make-ups: ◦ This excludes Witr, Eid prayers, Tarawih, regular Sunnahs, voluntary Nafal prayers, solar/lunar eclipse prayers (Kusuf), and rain prayers (Istisqa'). • Multiple Made-Up Prayers (Qada'): ◦ If a person is making up multiple missed prayers in a single sitting, it is Sunnah to call both the Adhan and Iqamah for the first prayer. For subsequent prayers, they have the choice of calling only the Iqamah or calling both.

3. Adhan and Iqamah Rules for Travelers

وَلِلْمُسَافِرِ إِذَا كَانُوا جَمَاعَةً سُنَّةٌ، وَإِنْ كَانَ وَحْدَهُ نُدِبَ، وَيُكْرَهُ تَرْكُهُمَا لَهُ • Travelers in Congregation: ◦ If travelers are performing their prayer together in congregation, calling both the Adhan and Iqamah remains a Sunnah Mu'akkadah. • Travelers Praying Alone: ◦ If a traveler is performing their prayer completely alone, calling the Adhan and Iqamah is highly recommended and praiseworthy (Mandub). • Disapproval of Omitting: ◦ It is legally disliked (Makruh) for a traveler to omit both calls. If a traveler is with companions and performs prayer without calling either, they have committed a disliked act.

4. The Prerequisite of Time Entrance

وَلَا يُجْزِئُ أَذَانٌ قَبْلَ الْوَقْتِ بَلْ يُعَادُ فِي الْوَقْتِ • The Core Condition: A fundamental prerequisite for the validity of the Adhan is that it must be called after the valid astronomical time window of that specific prayer has entered. • Calling Adhan Before the Time: ◦ If the Adhan is called even a few minutes before the actual time of the prayer enters (e.g., calling Fajr Adhan before true dawn rises), it is legally invalid and insufficient. ◦ Mandatory Repetition: Worshippers are legally required to repeat the Adhan once the valid time window has officially entered. ◦ This strict rule protects the congregation from mistakenly starting their prayers before the valid window has entered, which would render their prayers null and void.
