1. Voluntary Prayer & The Start of Congregation

إِذَا شَرَعَ فِي نَفْلٍ مُنْفَرِدًا فَأُقِيمَتِ الْجَمَاعَةُ قَطَعَ وَاقْتَدَى إِنْ لَمْ يَسْجُدْ لِلثَّانِيَةِ • The Rule for Voluntary Prayers: If a worshipper commences a voluntary (Nafal or Sunnah) prayer alone, and the Iqamah for the congregational Fard prayer begins. • The Boundary for Cutting: ◦ If they have not yet performed the prostration of the second rak'ah: they must immediately cut their voluntary prayer with a single Salaam and join the congregation. ◦ If they have already performed the prostration of the second rak'ah: they must complete the two units, perform Salaam, and then join the congregation. • Four-Unit Voluntary: If they had started a four-unit voluntary prayer and prostrated in the second unit, they must complete two units, perform Salaam, and then join the Imam.

2. Catching 4-Unit Fard: Before First Unit Prostration

وَإِنْ شَرَعَ فِي فَرْضٍ رُبَاعِيٍّ فَأُقِيمَتِ الْجَمَاعَةُ، قَطَعَ قَائِمًا إِنْ لَمْ يَسْجُدْ لِلْأُولَى • Four-Unit Obligatory Prayers (Zuhr, Asr, Isha): If a worshipper commences a four-unit Fard prayer alone, and the congregational Iqamah starts. • Rulings Before Prostration: ◦ If they have not yet performed the prostration of the first rak'ah: they must immediately cut their prayer while standing (Qā'iman) with a single Salaam to one side and join the Imam. • This rule prioritizes the immense reward of congregation, allowing the worshipper to cancel their individual unit before prostration to catch the congregation from the start.

3. Catching 4-Unit Fard: After First Unit Prostration

وَإِنْ سَجَدَ لِلْأُولَى ضَمَّ إِلَيْهَا ثَانِيَةً وَسَلَّمَ لِتَصِيرَ نَافِلَةً لَهُ • After the First Prostration: If the individual worshipper has already performed the prostration of the first unit, and the congregational prayer begins. • Conversion to Nafal: ◦ They must not cancel their unit immediately. Instead, they are legally required to add a second rak'ah to it. ◦ Upon completing the prostrations of the second unit, they must sit for Tashahhud, perform Salaam, and thereby convert these two units into a valid voluntary (Nafal) prayer. ◦ They then immediately join the Imam for the congregational Fard prayer.

4. Catching 4-Unit Fard: The Third Unit Boundary

وَإِنْ قَامَ لِلثَّالِثَةِ فَأُقِيمَتْ قَبْلَ سُجُودِهِ قَطَعَ قَائِمًا بِتَسْلِيمَةٍ فِي الْأَصَحِّ، وَإِنْ كَانَ فِي الثَّالِثَةِ سَجَدَ لَهَا تَمَّ لَهُ فَرْضُهُ مُنْفَرِدًا • Before Third Unit Prostration: If the worshipper has stood up for the third rak'ah but has not yet prostrated when the congregation starts: ◦ The Most Correct Opinion (al-Asahh): They must cut their prayer while standing with a single Salaam, without sitting down for Tashahhud, and join the congregation. • After Third Unit Prostration: If they have already performed the prostration of the third rak'ah: ◦ They are no longer permitted to cut their prayer. They must complete all four units individually. ◦ Since their individual Fard is complete, they may join the congregation for Zuhr or Isha with the intention of Nafal (joining is disliked for Asr or Fajr).

5. Exceptions: Maghrib and Fajr Prayers

وَإِنْ شَرَعَ فِي سُنَّةِ الظُّهْرِ... وَالْمَغْرِبِ إِذَا سَجَدَ لِلْأُولَى لَا يَقْطَعُ، بَلْ يُتِمُّهَا ثَلَاثًا وَلَا يَقْتَدِي • The Maghrib Prayer (3-Units): If a worshipper is praying Maghrib alone, has prostrated in the first unit, and the congregational Maghrib starts: ◦ They must not cut their prayer. ◦ They must complete all three units individually, and they are not permitted to join the congregation as Nafal (as there is no three-unit voluntary prayer). • The Fajr Prayer (2-Units): Similarly for Fajr, if they have prostrated in the first unit, they must complete it individually and do not join the congregation (as performing voluntary prayers after Fajr Fard is legally disliked).
