1. Fajr Congregation and Fajr Sunnah Alignment

وَلَا يَشْتَغِلُ عَنْهَا بِالسُّنَّةِ إِلا فِي الْفَجْرِ إِنْ أَمِنَ فَوْتَهُ، وَلَوْ فِي التَّشَهُّهُدِ • The General Rule: Once the Iqamah for the congregational Fard prayer begins, a worshipper must not occupy themselves with performing Sunnah prayers; they must join the congregation immediately. • The Fajr Exception: ◦ If the Fajr congregation starts, and the worshipper anticipates that by performing the two Sunnah units of Fajr first, they can still catch at least some part of the congregation (even if only the final Tashahhud sitting): ◦ The Ruling: They must perform the two Fajr Sunnah units first, and then immediately join the congregational prayer. ◦ If they fear missing the entire Fajr congregation (including the final sitting), they must omit the Sunnah and join the congregation immediately.

2. Valid Locations for Fajr Sunnah

وَيُصَلِّي سُنَّةَ الْفَجْرِ فِي مَسْجِدٍ بَعِيدًا عَنِ الصَّفِّ، أَوْ خَارِجَ الْمَسْجِدِ • Proximity to Rows Prohibited: It is highly disliked (Makruh) to perform the Fajr Sunnah directly behind or adjacent to the active congregational rows. • Valid Locations: ◦ Outside the main prayer hall of the mosque (e.g., in the courtyard or near the ablution area). ◦ If performed inside the prayer hall, it must be done far away from the rows (ba'idan 'an al-saff), behind a pillar or wall. • Juristic Reason: This prevents creating an impression of opposing or disrespecting the active congregation, and avoids causing confusion among worshippers.

3. Catching the Unit in the Bowing Posture (Ruku')

وَمَنْ أَدْرَكَ الْإِمَامَ رَاكِعًا فَكَبَّرَ وَوَقَفَ حَتَّى رَفَعَ الْإِمَامُ رَأْسَهُ لَمْ يُدْرِكِ الرَّكْعَةَ • Catching the Unit: If a latecomer joins the congregation while the Imam is in bowing (Ruku'), and they perform the opening Takbir and bow with the Imam before the Imam raises his head, they have successfully caught that rak'ah. • Missing the Unit: ◦ If the latecomer arrives, performs the opening Takbir, but remains standing without bowing until the Imam raises his head from Ruku': ◦ The Ruling: They have missed that rak'ah entirely, and it cannot be counted in their prayer. • Position for Takbir: The opening Takbir must be completed while standing fully upright; if a worshipper utters the Takbir while bending down into Ruku', their entry is legally invalid.

4. Rulings for the Latecomer (al-Masbuq)

وَالْمَسْبُوقُ يَتَابِعُ الْإِمَامَ فِي سُجُودِ السَّهْوِ، وَلَا يُسَلِّمُ مَعَهُ، بَلْ يَقُومُ بَعْدَهُ لِقَضَاءِ مَا سَبَقَهُ • Definition of Masbuq: A latecomer who missed one or more units of prayer with the Imam. • Imam's Forgetfulness Prostration: The Masbuq is legally required to follow the Imam in performing the prostration of forgetfulness (Sujud al-Sahw) at the end of the sitting. • Prohibition of Salaam: ◦ The Masbuq must not make Salaam with the Imam. ◦ Once the Imam has completed his Salaam on both sides, the Masbuq must stand up to complete their missed units. ◦ If the Masbuq forgetfully performs Salaam along with the Imam, specific forgetfulness rules apply.
