Lesson
1. Overview of the Five Categories of Water
Source text ثُمَّ الْمِيَاهُ عَلَى خَمْسَةِ أَقْسَامٍ... • In Hanafi law, all waters are classified into five distinct legal categories based on their purity and ability to purify: ◦ Tahir Mutahhir Ghayr Makruh: Pure and purifying, not disliked (default absolute water). ◦ Tahir Mutahhir Makruh: Pure and purifying, but disliked for use. ◦ Tahir Ghayr Mutahhir: Pure in itself but cannot purify other things (Used Water). ◦ Ma' al-Najis: Impure water. ◦ Ma' al-Mashkuk: Doubtful water.
2. Categories 1 & 2: Absolute and Disliked Waters
Source text وَطَاهِرٌ مُطَهِّرٌ مَكْرُوهٌ: وَهُوَ مَا شَرِبَتْ مِنْهُ الْهِرَّةُ وَنَحْوَهَا... • Category 1: Default absolute water (rain, rivers, springs), which is valid for Wudu and Ghusl without any legal disapproval. • Category 2 (Disliked Water): A small volume of water from which a domestic cat (or similar household roaming pests like mice or snakes) has drunk. • Ruling: The water remains pure and purifying. However, using it when uncontaminated absolute water is available is Makruh Tanzihan (mildly disliked). If no other water is available, using it is valid without dislike, and dry ablution (Tayammum) is not allowed.
3. Category 3: Pure but Non-Purifying (Used Water)
Source text وَطَاهِرٌ غَيْرُ مُطَهِّرٍ: وَهُوَ مَا اسْتُعْمِلَ لِرَفْعِ حَدَثٍ أَوْ لِقُرْبَةٍ • Status of Used Water: It is classified as pure in itself (it is not physically impure or filthy), but it is non-purifying (Ghayr Mutahhir), meaning it cannot be reused to perform another Wudu or Ghusl. • Triggers for Used Status: Absolute water transitions to used water when it is used on the body for one of two specific legal purposes: ◦ Raf'i Hadath: To remove a state of ritual impurity (performing obligatory Wudu or Ghusl). ◦ Li-Qurbatin: To achieve spiritual reward (such as performing a new Wudu over an existing Wudu with the explicit intention of worship).
4. Critical Timings and the Role of Intention
Source text وَيَصِيرُ الْمَاءُ مُسْتَعْمَلًا بِمُجَرَّدِ انْفِصَالِهِ عَنِ الْجَسَدِ • Moment of Status Change: Water is not classified as used while it is still flowing over the body part. It attains the status of used (Musta'mal) the exact moment it separates and drops off the body (Infishal). • The Role of Intention (Niyyah): ◦ If a person who already has Wudu washes their hands merely to cool down or remove dust (without any intention of gaining reward), the water is NOT classified as used. ◦ If a person in ritual impurity puts their hand into a water vessel without intention, the water becomes used because ritual impurity was removed from that hand, regardless of intention.
5. Tree Saps & Changes in Natural State via Cooking
Source text وَلَا يَجُوزُ بِمَاءِ شَجَرٍ وَثَمَرٍ... وَلَا بِمَاءٍ زَالَ طَبْعُهُ بِالطَّبْخِ • Tree and Fruit Saps: Liquids extracted from trees or fruits (e.g., grape juice), even if they ooze out naturally without being squeezed, are invalid for purification. • Altering Water via Cooking (al-Ma' al-Matbukh): ◦ If a pure substance (like chickpeas or beans) is cooked in water to the extent that the water loses its natural thinness and flowability (Riqah), it becomes restricted water and is invalid for purification. ◦ Exception: If a pure substance is soaked in water briefly without cooking to soften it, and the water retains its natural thinness and viscosity, the water remains valid for performing Wudu.
Practice questions
Question 1
When does absolute water legally transition to the category of Used Water (al-Musta'mal)?
- As soon as it touches the skin
- The moment it separates and flows off the limb
- When it is stored in a storage bucket
- Only after 10 minutes have passed
Question 2
Used water (al-Ma' al-Musta'mal) is classified as physically impure (Najis), and if it touches a garment, the garment must be washed.
Question 3
Match the water scenarios with their correct legal classifications:
Question 4
If a person who already has Wudu performs a new Wudu merely to cool off, without any intention of reward (Qurbah), what is the status of the runoff water?
- It remains Pure and Purifying (Tahir Mutahhir).
- It becomes Used Water (Musta'mal).
- It becomes Impure (Najis).
- It becomes Doubtful Water (Mashkuk).
Question 5
Water in which uncooked chickpeas are soaked briefly to soften them remains absolute and valid for Wudu, provided its natural thinness is not lost.
Question 6
If a person in state of minor ritual impurity puts their hand into a water vessel without any spiritual intention, what is the legal status of the water in that vessel?
- It remains Absolute Water because there was no intention of reward.
- It becomes Used Water (Musta'mal) because minor ritual impurity was removed from the hand.
- It becomes physically impure (Najis).
- It becomes Restricted Water (Muqayyad).
Question 7
Sort the following liquids into "Valid for purification" and "Invalid for purification" according to the rules of Level 3:
Question 8
Performing a new Wudu over an existing Wudu with the explicit intention of gaining reward (Qurbah) triggers the status of Used Water (Musta'mal) for the runoff.
