1. Introduction to the Twenty-Seven Conditions of Prayer
لَا بُدَّ لِصِحَّةِ الصَّلَاةِ مِنْ سَبْعَةٍ وَعِشْرِينَ شَيْئًا... • Definition of a Condition (Shart): A legal prerequisite that must be fulfilled before starting the prayer, and must remain continuously maintained throughout the entire prayer. • The 27 Conditions: Hanafi jurisprudence lists exactly twenty-seven (27) specific requirements that are mandatory for the validity of prayer. • If any of these prerequisite conditions are omitted or compromised, the prayer does not legally contract or begin. • In this level, we will analyze the first set of conditions regarding physical and ritual purity.
2. Ritual Purity of Body (Taharah)
الطَّهَارَةُ مِنَ الْحَدَثِ الأَصْغَرِ وَالأَكْبَرِ • The Core Condition: Before commencing prayer, the body of the worshipper must be fully purified from all states of ritual impurity (Hadath). • Minor Impurity (Hadath Asghar): The state of lacking Wudu. This must be rectified by performing valid Wudu (ablution). • Major Impurity (Hadath Akbar): The state of major ritual impurity (such as Janabah, or cessation of menses/lochia). This must be rectified by performing valid Ghusl (bath). • If a person begins their prayer while in a state of ritual impurity, their prayer is legally null and void, even if omitted out of forgetfulness.
3. Cleanliness from Real Physical Filth (Najasah)
وَطَهَارَةُ الْجَسَدِ وَالثَّوْبِ وَالْمَكَانِ مِنَ النَّجَاسَةِ الْحَقِيقِيَّةِ • Real Filth (Najasah): Refers to physical, tangible impurities that can be seen or touched (such as urine, feces, blood, or alcohol). • Three Levels of Required Cleanliness: ◦ Al-Jasad (The Body): The entire body of the worshipper must be clean from any non-tolerated filth. ◦ Al-Thawb (The Clothing): All garments worn (including headgear, socks, and undergarments) must be pure. ◦ Al-Makan (The Place): The physical area where the prayer is executed must be pure.
4. Specific Contact Spots for Valid Place Cleanliness
مَوْضِعُ الْقَدَمَيْنِ وَالرُّكْبَتَيْنِ وَالْيَدَيْنِ وَالْجَبْهَةِ • The Legal Boundary: The requirement for the cleanliness of the "place" does not apply to the entire room or the whole rug. It applies strictly and exclusively to the exact spots of physical contact: ◦ The spot where the feet stand (Mawdi' al-Qadamayn). ◦ The spots where the knees and hands are placed (Mawdi' al-Rukbatayn wal-Yadayn). ◦ The spot where the forehead and nose touch the ground during prostration (Mawdi' al-Jabhah). • The Rule: If there is filth on another part of the prayer mat that does not come into physical contact with any of the worshipper's limbs, the prayer is completely valid.
5. Prerequisite: Covering the Private Parts (Satr al-Aurah)
وَسَتْرُ الْعَوْرَةِ بِالتَّقْدِيرِ الْمَفْرُوضِ • The Concept of Aurah: Refers to those specific parts of the body that are legally required to be covered in prayer and in front of others under normal circumstances. • Covering Prerequisite: Covering this mandatory area (Satr al-Aurah) with clean fabric before commencing the prayer is an absolute prerequisite for validity. • Exposure Rules: If a portion of the Aurah becomes exposed during the prayer, specific legal rules govern whether the prayer is invalidated. • (The detailed anatomical boundaries of the Aurah for men and women will be studied thoroughly in Level 14).
