Lesson
1. استقبال القبلة: Obligation of Facing the Qiblah
وَاسْتِقْبَالُ الْقِبْلَةِ، فَلِلْمَكِّيِّ الْمُشَاهِدِ فَرْضُهُ عَيْنُهَا، وَلِغَيْرِهِ جِهَتُهَا • Istiqbal al-Qiblah: Facing the direction of the Holy Ka'bah at the commencement of and throughout the prayer is the fourth fundamental condition. • Worshipper inside Makkah: For anyone who can directly see the Ka'bah (Mushahid), it is strictly obligatory (Fard) to align themselves with the exact physical structure ('Ayn al-Ka'bah) of the Ka'bah. • Worshipper outside Makkah: For anyone who is far away and cannot see the Ka'bah, it is obligatory to face the general direction (Jihat al-Qiblah) of the Ka'bah. ◦ The Direction Boundary: A slight deviation from the exact degree of the Ka'bah does not invalidate the prayer of someone far away, as long as they face the general direction.
2. What “Direction of the Qiblah” Means
Source commentary: جهتها: أي غير المشاهد فرضه إصابة جهة القبلة، وهو الجانب الذي إذا توجه إليه الشخص يكون مسامتا للكعبة أو هوائها • A worshipper who cannot see the Ka'bah is required to face its direction (jihah). • The commentary explains jihah as the side which, when a person faces it, aligns them with the Ka'bah or the airspace above it. • This is the source's explanation of directional facing; it does not require the distant worshipper to see the Ka'bah itself.
3. The Rule Depends on Seeing the Ka'bah
Source matn: ولغير المشاهد جهتها Source commentary: أي غير المشاهد فرضه إصابة جهة القبلة • The matn distinguishes between the worshipper who can see the Ka'bah and the worshipper who cannot see it. • The one who sees it faces the Ka'bah itself; the one who does not see it faces its direction. • The distinction is therefore based on direct sight of the Ka'bah, not merely on whether a person is described as a resident or traveler.
4. A Non-viewer in Makkah
Source matn: ولغير المشاهد جهتها ولو بمكة على الصحيح Source commentary: فشمل من كان يعاينها ومن لم يكن • The matn adds that the non-viewer's rule applies even in Makkah, according to the sound position stated here. • A person in Makkah who cannot see the Ka'bah faces its direction; direct alignment with the visible structure is required of the one who actually sees it. • Being in Makkah does not, by itself, turn a non-viewer into a viewer.
5. Directional Alignment and Distance
Source commentary 1: لو فرض خط من تلقاء وجهه... Source commentary 2: المقابلة إذا وقعت في مسافة بعيدة لا تزول بما تزول به من الانحراف لو كانت في مسافة قريبة، ويتفاوت ذلك بحسب تفاوت البعد • The commentary explains directional facing by imagining a line extending forward from the worshipper toward the Ka'bah. • It also notes that the effect of the same physical displacement is not identical at a near and a far distance.
