Lesson
1. Prerequisite: Belief and Knowledge of Time Entrance
مَعْرِفَةُ دُخُولِ الْوَقْتِ يَقِينًا أَوْ ظَنًّا غَالِبًا • Prerequisite Condition: For the valid contraction of prayer, the worshipper must have firm knowledge or strong conviction (Ghalib al-Zann) that the valid prayer time has officially entered. • Praying under Doubt: ◦ If a person begins their prayer while having a state of doubt (Shakk) regarding the entrance of the time (e.g., they are unsure whether the time has entered or not): ◦ The Ruling: Their prayer is null and void, even if they discover after completing the prayer that the time had actually entered at that moment! ◦ The Reason: Because a doubtful start lacks the decisive resolution (Jazm) required to formulate a valid intention for worship.
2. Intention (Niyyah) and Obligatory Specifications
وَالنِّيَّةُ، وَالْعِبْرَةُ فِيهَا لِعَقْدِ الْقَلْبِ، وَلَا بُدَّ مِنْ تَعْيِينِ الْفَرْضِ وَالْوِتْرِ وَالْعِيدِ • The Reality of Niyyah: Intention is legally defined by the resolute action of the heart. Verbalizing the intention is recommended (Mustahabb), but the ultimate validity depends strictly on the heart's awareness. • Legal Classifications of Specification: ◦ Voluntary and Sunnah Prayers: For general voluntary (Nafal) or regular Sunnah prayers, a general intention to pray is legally sufficient. ◦ Fard, Witr, and Eid Prayers: For these three categories of prayer, the worshipper must explicitly specify the particular prayer in their intention (e.g., intending "today's obligatory Zuhr" or "Witr after Isha"). • If the intention for an obligatory prayer remains general or unspecified, the obligatory duty is not discharged.
3. Timing of Intention and Forbidden Separators
وَأَنْ لَا يَفْصِلَ بَيْنَهُمَا بِمَانِعٍ كَأَكْلٍ وَشُرْبٍ وَكَلَامٍ • The Optimal Timing: It is best for the intention to be simultaneous with the Opening Takbir (Takbirat al-Iftitah). • Permissibility: Intending slightly before the Takbir is valid, provided that no actions incompatible with prayer occur between the intention and the Takbir. • Mani' (Incompatible Separators): ◦ If a person formulates their intention to pray, but before uttering the Opening Takbir they eat, drink, or engage in conversation: ◦ The Ruling: The initial intention is invalidated. They must formulate a fresh, active intention of the heart at the moment of uttering the Takbir.
4. The Opening Takbir (Tahrimah): Audibility & Posture
وَالنُّطْقُ بِالتَّحْرِيمَةِ قَائِماً بِحَيْثُ يُسْمِعُ نَفْسَهُ • The Utterance: Pronouncing the Opening Takbir (Tahrimah) aloud is strictly obligatory to enter and contract the prayer. • Audibility Standard: ◦ The Takbir must be pronounced with a volume such that the caller can hear themselves (Yusmi'u nafsahu). ◦ The Condition: This applies assuming normal hearing and no overwhelming background noise. Merely conceiving the words in the heart without physical vocalization renders the Takbir invalid. • The Posture: The worshipper must utter the Takbir while standing upright (Qā'iman), assuming they are physically capable of standing.
5. Follower's Alignment with the Imam's Takbir
وَعَدَمُ تَأْخِيرِ النِّيَّةِ عَنِ التَّحْرِيمَةِ، وَأَنْ يَكُونَ مَعَ الإِمَامِ أَوْ بَعْدَهُ • Follower's Joining: A follower (Muqtadi) joining the congregational prayer must align their opening transition strictly with the Imam's Takbir. • Critical Prerequisite: ◦ The follower must complete their Opening Takbir with or after the Imam's Takbir. ◦ Strict Warning: If the follower completes pronouncing his opening Takbir before the Imam completes his: ◦ The Ruling: The follower's prayer has NOT contracted or begun at all; their entry into the congregation is legally void. • For the follower's entry to be valid, his utterance of 'Akbar' must occur simultaneously with or after the Imam's utterance of 'Akbar'.
