Lesson

1. The Two Absolute Pillars of Tayammum

Source text أَنْ يَكُونَ بِضَرْبَتَيْنِ باطِنِ الْكَفَّيْنِ وَلَوْ فِي مَكَانٍ وَاحِدٍ • The Pillars: While Wudu has four absolute obligations, Tayammum has only two core pillars (Arkan): ◦ Pillar 1: The first strike (Dharbah) of both palms on the earth, followed by a complete wiping of the face. ◦ Pillar 2: The second strike of the palms on the earth, followed by a complete wiping of both arms up to and including the elbows. • The Striking Spot: Both strikes are performed on pure earth, even if done exactly on the same physical spot. • The Alternative: If dust naturally settles on the body and the person rubs it over the limbs with the explicit intention of Tayammum, it legally satisfies the requirement of the two strikes.

2. The Seven Sunnah acts of Tayammum

Source text وَسُنَنُ التَّيَمُّمِ سَبْعَةٌ: التَّسْمِيَةُ فِي أَوَّلِهِ، وَالْمُوَالَاةُ، وَالتَّرْتِيبُ... • To perform Tayammum in its complete, optimal manner, seven Sunnah acts apply: ◦ Al-Tasmiyah: Reciting the Basmalah at the beginning. ◦ Al-Muwala' (Continuity): Wiping the limbs continuously without pause. ◦ Al-Tartib (Sequence): Preserving the order (wiping the face first, then the arms). ◦ Iqbal al-Yadayn wa-Idbaruhama: Sliding the hands forward and backward upon the earth during the strike. ◦ Nafdhuhama: Shaking the hands off to remove excess dust. ◦ Tafriq al-Asabi': Keeping the fingers splayed/separated during the strike to allow dust to reach the inner webs. ◦ Delaying Tayammum: Intentionally delaying the dry ablution if water is anticipated (detailed next).

3. The Recommended Delay of Tayammum

Source text وَنَدْبُ تَأْخِيرِ التَّيَمُّمِ لِمَنْ يَرْجُو الْمَاءَ قَبْلَ خُرُوجِ الْوَقْتِ • The Recommended Delay (Nadb al-Ta'khir): If a traveler or resident has a strong, reasonable expectation that water will become available before the prayer time expires: • The Ruling: It is recommended (Mandub/Mustahabb) for them to delay performing Tayammum until the final, preferred block of the prayer time. • The Reason: This delay maximizes the possibility of performing the prayer with the superior, default medium of purification (water) rather than earth. • However, if there is no anticipation or hope of finding water, performing Tayammum at the start of the prayer time is preferred.

4. The Water Search Mandate: 400 Paces Boundary

Source text وَيَجِبُ طَلَبُ الْمَاءِ إِلَى مِقْدَارِ أَرْبَعِمِائَةِ خُطْوَةٍ إِنْ ظَنَّ قُرْبَهُ مَعَ الْأَمْنِ • The Search Law: If a person is in a wilderness or open plain and strongly suspects the proximity of water: • The Ruling: It is strictly mandatory (Wajib) for them to search for water up to a radius of four hundred (400) paces/steps (Arba'mi'ah khutwah). • The Conditions: ◦ There must be a strong suspicion that water is nearby. ◦ Complete safety of life, honor, and property is guaranteed (Ma' al-Amn). • Concession: If safety is threatened (e.g., wild beasts or thieves) or there is absolutely no suspicion of water nearby, the mandate is dropped, and they may perform Tayammum immediately.

5. Asking Companions & Purchasing Water Rules

Source text وَيَجُوجُ طَلَبُهُ مِمَّنْ هُوَ مَعَهُ... وَإِنْ لَمْ يُعْطِهِ إِلَّا بِثَمَنِ مِثْلِهِ لَزِمَهُ شِرَاؤُهُ • Requesting Traveling Companions: If traveling in a caravan or group, a person is legally obligated to ask their companions for water before resorting to Tayammum. • The Purchase Rule: If a companion refuses to give water for free but offers to sell it at its fair, local market value (Thaman al-Mithl): • The Ruling: The person is strictly obligated to purchase the water, provided they have excess funds beyond their necessary travel expenses and dependents' needs. • Concession: If the seller demands an exorbitant, excessive price (Ghabn al-Fahish), or if the traveler lacks excess money, the obligation is lifted, and Tayammum is permitted.

6. Wound Management: When to Wash vs. Wipe

Source text وَلَوْ كَانَ أَكْثَرُ الْبَدَنِ أَوْ نِصْفُهُ جَرِيحًا تَيَمَّمَ... • Management of Wounded Bodies: If a person requires Ghusl but has physical wounds on their body: ◦ Majority Wounded: If half or more than half of the body is wounded or injured, they do not bathe. Instead, they perform Tayammum only as a complete substitute for the bath. ◦ Majority Healthy: If the wounds cover less than half of the body (the healthy skin is the majority), they must perform Ghusl, washing the healthy skin and merely wiping (Mas'h) over the wounded areas. • No Combining: In Hanafi law, it is invalid to combine washing and Tayammum in a single purification; one either bathes or performs Tayammum.
