1. The Core Eligibility of the Caller

وَأَذَانُ الْجُنُبِ، وَصَبِيٍّ لَا يَعْقِلُ، وَسَكْرَانَ، وَامْرَأَةٍ، وَفَاسِقٍ، وَقَاعِدٍ، يُكْرَهُ • Core Qualifications: For the Adhan and Iqamah to be performed in the optimal Sunnah manner, the caller should be sane, adult, and male. • Discerning Child: The call of a minor child who lacks cognitive discernment (Sabi la ya'qil) is legally disapproved and legally disliked (Makruh). • Insane or Intoxicated Caller: The call of an insane person or an intoxicated person is disliked. If either of them calls the Adhan, repeating it is recommended.

2. Calling Under States of Ritual Impurity

وَيُكْرَهُ أَذَانُ الْجُنُبِ وَيُعَادُ، وَلَا يُعَادُ أَذَانُ الْمُحْدِثِ بَلْ إِقَامَتُهُ • State of Major Impurity (Janabah): Calling the Adhan in a state of major ritual impurity (Junub) is disliked. • The Ruling: The congregation is recommended to repeat the Adhan once a pure caller is available. • State of Minor Impurity (Hadath): Calling the Adhan without Wudu (Muhdith) is slightly disliked, but: ◦ The Ruling: The Adhan remains legally valid and does NOT need to be repeated. • Rules for Iqamah: Calling the Iqamah in either state of impurity (minor or major) is disliked, but it is not repeated once called.

3. Further Disliked Callers

• The Call of a Woman: A woman calling the Adhan is legally disliked; if she calls it, the Adhan is recommended to be repeated. • The Sinner (Fasiq): Appointing an open, unrepentant sinner (Fasiq) to call the Adhan is disliked. This is because the caller holds a position of religious trust, and a sinner's testimony is legally compromised. • Seated Calls: Calling the Adhan while sitting without a valid physical excuse (such as illness) is disliked. ◦ The Exception: If a person is performing their prayer completely alone, they are permitted to call the Adhan and Iqamah while sitting for themselves without any dislike.

4. Forbidden Chanting and Melodies (Tahin)

وَيُكْرَهُ التَّلْحِينُ فِي الأَذَانِ وَالإِقَامَةِ • Al-Talhīn (Chanting/Melodies): Singing, dragging letters excessively, or altering the vowels and letters of the Adhan and Iqamah to fit a musical melody (Talhīn) is disliked and forbidden. • The Legal Boundary: Beautifying one's voice (Tahsin al-Sawt) without altering letters is highly recommended. However, if the attempt at beautification corrupts the pronunciation or alters the letters (such as extending 'Allah' into 'Aallah'), it becomes disliked, and the Adhan is recommended to be repeated.

5. States Waiving the Replying Obligation

مَوَاضِعُ لا يَجِبُ فِيهَا إِجَابَةُ الأَذَانِ • Exempted States: A person engaged in any of the following activities is legally exempt from responding verbally to the Adhan: ◦ While relieving oneself in the restroom. ◦ While engaged in marital relations. ◦ While currently performing his own prayer. ◦ While listening to a sermon (Khutbah) such as Friday or Eid sermons. ◦ While actively engaged in teaching, studying sacred knowledge, or reciting the Quran. ◦ While actively eating food.
