1. Errors in Recitation (Zallat al-Qari'): Core Meaning Rules

بَابُ زَلَّةِ الْقَارِئِ: تَغَيُّرُ الْمَعْنَى تَغَيُّرًا فَاحِشًا يُفْسِدُ مُطْلَقًا • Introduction to *Zallat al-Qari'*: This term refers to the mistakes and slips in Quranic recitation committed by a worshipper during prayer. • The Core Juristic Rule: If the mistake in recitation causes a severe and drastic change in meaning (Taghayyur Fahish), the prayer is immediately invalidated. • Minor Meaning Changes: If the change in meaning is minor and does not result in blasphemous or doctrinally unacceptable meanings, the prayer is not invalidated. • Existence in the Quran: If the mispronounced word possesses an equivalent or homophonous counterpart elsewhere in the Quran, some authoritative opinions hold that the prayer remains valid.

2. Grammatical & Vowelling (I'rab) Errors

الْخَطَأُ فِي الْإِعْرَابِ... فَإِنْ لَمْ يَتَغَيَّرْ بِهِ الْمَعْنَى لَا تَفْسُدُ بِهِ صَلَاتُهُ بِالْإِجْمَاعِ • Vowelling (I'rab) Errors: Altering the short vowels—such as misreading a Fathah (ah), Kasrah (ee), or Dammah (oo)—is classified as an I'rab error. • Consensus Rule: If the alteration of vowels does not change the meaning of the verse, the prayer remains fully valid by consensus (Ijma') of the Hanafi jurists. • Shaddah and Maddah Errors: ◦ Reading a doubled letter with a shaddah as light (Takhfif), or reading a light letter with a shaddah (Tashdid). ◦ Shortening a long vowel (Qasr), or lengthening a short vowel (Madd). ◦ The Rule: In all such phonetic mistakes, as long as the meaning does not become explicitly corrupted, the prayer remains legally valid.

3. Errors in Pausing and Commencing (Waqf & Ibtida')

الْمَسْأَلَةُ الثَّانِيَةُ: فِي الْوَقْفِ وَالِابْتِدَاءِ • Waqf & Ibtida': Pausing (breathing) at an inappropriate place during recitation, or commencing the recitation from an incorrect word. • The Rule: Even if pausing or commencing at an incorrect spot results in a temporary change in meaning, the prayer is NOT invalidated. • The Condition: This concession applies provided that the worshipper did not intentionally target a corrupted or blasphemous meaning. • The law accommodates human respiratory limitations and physical weakness, granting wide legal excuse in matters of pauses and starts.

4. Letter Substitutions & Phonetic Proximities

الْمَسْأَلَةُ الثَّالِثَةُ: وَضْعُ حَرْفٍ مَوْضِعَ حَرْفٍ آخَرَ... إِنْ لَمْ يُمْكِنِ الْفَصْلُ بَيْنَهُمَا كَالصَّادِ مَعَ السِّينِ لَا تَفْسُدُ • Phonetic Proximities: Letters whose points of articulation (Makharij) and sounds are so similar that distinguishing between them is extremely difficult for common reciters. • Proximity Examples: Substituting Sad with Seen, Ta (ط) with Ta (ت), or Zha (ظ) with Daad (ض) or Thal (ذ). • The Legal Ruling: Substituting such phonetically close letters does NOT invalidate the prayer, as difficulty distinguishing close letterss and common difficulties are legally excused. • Distant Letter Substitutions: If the substituted letters possess completely different points of articulation and their change drastically corrupts the meaning, the prayer is invalidated.
