1. Excused Limits of Heavy Impurity

Source text وَعُفِيَ قَدْرُ الدِّرْهَمِ مِنَ الْغَلِيظَةِ... • The Legal Concession: To prevent hardship and difficulty, Islamic law tolerates a minor amount of physical impurity on garments or bodies. Prayer performed with this minor amount remains legally valid (though washing it is recommended). • Limits for Heavy Impurities (Ghalizah): ◦ Solid/Weighty filth (such as feces): Up to the weight of a dirham coin (approx. 4.3 grams). ◦ Liquid filth (such as wine, blood, or urine): Up to the surface area of a dirham coin (approx. 3 cm in diameter / the hollow of the palm). • If the contamination exceeds this limit, performing prayer with it is invalid.

2. Excused Limits of Light Impurity

Source text وَمَا دُونَ رُبُعِ الثَّوْبِ أَوِ الْبَدَنِ مِنَ الْخَفِيفَةِ... • Limits for Light Impurities (Khafifah): The concession for Light Impurities (such as sheep or cow urine) is significantly broader: • The Rule: Contamination is excused if it covers less than one-quarter (1/4th) of the affected garment or the affected limb of the body. • Practical Example: If sheep urine gets on a shirt sleeve, as long as the wet area covers less than a quarter of the total surface area of that sleeve, the garment is tolerated and prayer is valid.

3. Exception for Fine Urine Sprays

Source text وَعُفِيَ رَشَاشُ بَوْلٍ كَرُؤُوسِ الْإِبَرِ... • Concession of Public Necessity ('Umūm al-Balwā): Extremely fine sprays of urine (rashash al-bawl), no larger than the heads of needles (ru'ūs al-ibar): • Urine spray as fine as needle heads is excused.

4. Moisture and Dampness Transfer Rules

Source text وَلَوْ ابْتَلَّ فِرَاشٌ أَوْ تُرَابٌ بِنَجِسٍ... • The Transfer Rule: If a dry, pure garment is placed on a wet, impure bed or soil: • When does it become impure?: ◦ If the garment draws enough moisture that squeezing ('asr) it would yield drops of liquid, the garment becomes impure. ◦ If the physical characteristics (color or smell) of the impurity are clearly transferred to the garment, it becomes impure. • When does it remain pure?: If the garment only experiences minor dampness without the ability to yield drops upon squeezing, and no color or smell transfers, it remains pure.

5. Road Dust Concession

Source text وَعُفِيَ غُبَارُ الطَّرِيقِ وَلَوْ عَلِمَ نَجَاسَتَهُ... • Road Dust: If a person walks on a road known to be contaminated with animal droppings, and dry dust from the road blows and settles on their clothes: • The Ruling: Dry road dust (Ghubār al-tarīq) is completely tolerated and excused, even if one is certain of its underlying impurity. • Exception: This excuse applies as long as no actual physical traces (such as the distinct color or smell) of the impurity are visible on the cloth.
