1. Excuses for Missing Congregation Part 1
يَسْقُطُ حُضُورُ الْجَمَاعَةِ بِوَاحِدٍ مِنْ ثَمَانِيَةَ عَشَرَ شَيْئًا: مَطَرٍ، وَبَرْدٍ، وَخَوْفٍ، وَظُلْمَةٍ شَدِيدَةٍ، وَحَبْسٍ • Congregational Exemptions: Hanafi law recognizes eighteen (18) valid excuses that legally exempt a man from attending the congregational prayer without incurring any sin: ◦ Al-Matar: Heavy rain that makes traveling to the mosque practically difficult. ◦ Al-Bard: Severe, freezing cold that risks causing illness. ◦ Al-Khawf: Active fear of an enemy, wild predator, or oppressor. ◦ Al-Zhulmah al-Shadidah: Intense pitch darkness at night that makes navigating the path dangerous. ◦ Al-Habs: Active imprisonment or the immediate threat of incarceration due to debt.
2. Excuses for Missing Congregation Part 2
وَمَرَضٍ، وَفَلَجٍ، وَقَطْعِ يَدٍ وَرِجْلٍ، وَوَعْثَاءِ سَفَرٍ، وَحُضُورِ طَعَامٍ تَتَوْقُهُ نَفْسُهُ • Continued valid legal reasons for omitting the congregation: ◦ Al-Marad: Active illness that prevents walking to the mosque. ◦ Al-Falaj: Paralysis affecting movement. ◦ Qat' al-Yad wa al-Rijl: Having one's hands or feet amputated, making travel impractical. ◦ Al-'Ama: Blindness (provided there is no regular guide to escort him). ◦ Al-Zamanah: Chronic, debilitating physical disability or extreme senile weakness. ◦ Hudhur al-Ta'am: Food being served, provided the worshipper is intensely hungry and his soul craves it (this concession preserves the mandatory legal focus—Khushu'—during prayer). ◦ Wa'tha' al-Safar: Severe physical exhaustion resulting from recent travel.
3. Excuses for Missing Congregation Part 3
وَتَكْرَارِ فِقْهٍ، وَقِيَامِهِ بِمَرِيضٍ، وَشِدَّةِ رِيحٍ لَيْلًا لَا نَهَارًا • The final set of valid exemptions from congregational attendance: ◦ Al-Qiyam bi-Maridh: Actively nursing a severely ill person who cannot be left unattended or whose care relies solely on the worshipper. ◦ Takrar Fiqh: Being deeply engaged in teaching, reviewing, or repeating complex issues of Islamic law (Fiqh), where leaving would disrupt the educational process. ◦ Shiddat Rih Laylan: Fierce, destructive winds or dust storms occurring specifically at night (daytime wind is not a valid excuse). ◦ Mudafa'at al-Akhbatha-yn: Resisting the urgent need to urinate or defecate (performing prayer under this physical pressure is disliked; one must relieve themselves first). ◦ Khidmat al-Maridh: Active hands-on caregiving for a patient. ◦ Old Age: Severe senility and advanced age.
4. Follower's Action During Imam's Positional Changes
لَوْ سَلَّمَ الْإِمَامُ قَبْلَ فَرَاغِ الْمُقْتَدِي مِنَ التَّشَهُّدِ يَتِمَّهُ، وَلَوْ زَادَ سَجْدَةً أَوْ قَامَ بَعْدَ الْقُعُودِ الْأَخِيرِ لَا يَتْبَعُهُ • Completing the Tashahhud: If the Imam performs the Salaam before the follower (Ma'mum) has finished reciting his own Tashahhud, the follower must complete his recitation first before performing the Salaam. • Imam Adding an Extra Prostration: If the Imam forgetfully adds a third prostration (Sajdah) in any unit, the follower must NOT follow him in this invalid addition; he remains waiting. • Imam Rising for an Extra Rak'ah: ◦ If the Imam forgetfully stands up for an extra unit (e.g., rising for a 5th unit in Zuhr) after having completed the final sitting (Qa'dah), the follower does not stand up. ◦ If the Imam completed his final sitting, the follower remains seated, waiting. If the Imam proceeds to perform the prostration of the extra unit, the follower performs the Salaam on his own to conclude.
