1. Prerequisites of the Janazah Prayer
وَكَوْنُ الْمَيِّتِ عَلَى الْأَرْضِ • The Six Prerequisites for Validity: ◦ Islam of the Deceased: Janazah is invalid for a non-Muslim. ◦ Purity of the Deceased: The body, shroud, and placing ground must be ritually pure. ◦ Precedence: The body must be placed in front of the Imam. ◦ Presence: The body must be physically present (absentee Janazah is legally invalid in the Hanafi school). ◦ Placed on the Ground: The body must be resting on the ground or a platform connected to it (not held high on a vehicle). ◦ Presence of the Majority: The majority of the physical body, or at least half of the body with the head intact, must be present.
2. Pillars and Structure of the Janazah Prayer
• The Pillars (Arkan) of Janazah: The prayer has only two absolute pillars: ◦ The Four Takbirs: Each of the four Takbirs is legally equivalent to a complete rak'ah. ◦ Qiyam: Standing upright without a valid excuse is strictly mandatory (Fard). • No Bowing or Prostrations: This prayer contains absolutely no bowing (Ruku'), prostration (Sujud), or physical sitting. • Imam's Alignment: The Imam must align himself directly opposite the chest (Sadr) of the deceased body.
3. Step-by-Step Janazah Prayer Execution
ثُمَّ يُكَبِّرُ وَيُسَلِّمُ • First Takbir: Raise the hands to the ears, say the Takbir, clasp the hands below the navel, and recite the praise (Thana'). • Second Takbir: Say the second Takbir without raising the hands, and recite the Ibrahimic sending of blessings (Salawat). • Third Takbir: Say the third Takbir without raising the hands, and recite the Sunnah Janazah supplication for the deceased (using the customized child du'a if applicable). • Fourth Takbir: Say the fourth Takbir without raising the hands, and immediately utter the Salaam to the right and left to exit the prayer. • Note: Hands are only raised in the very first opening Takbir.
4. Leadership Priority and Carrying the Bier
وَالْمَشْيُ بِهَا سَرِيعًا دُونَ الْخَبَبِ • Priority of Leadership: The primary legal right to lead the Janazah prayer belongs to the Sultan (supreme ruler), then the Qadhi (judge), then the regular local neighborhood Imam, and then the legal guardian (Wali) of the deceased. • Carrying the Bier: It is a Sunnah to carry the bier (Janazah) from all four corners sequentially. • The 40-Pace Rule: The Sunnah is fulfilled by carrying each of the four corners for ten paces each, totaling forty paces. • Speed of Movement: It is Sunnah to walk swiftly but without jogging or shaking the body of the deceased (Duna al-Khabab). Followers should walk behind or closely around the bier.
5. Burial and Grave Specifications
وَيُكْرَهُ لِلْإِحْكَامِ بَعْدَ الدَّفْنِ • Grave Depth: The grave must be dug to a depth equal to half of a standing body height, or ideally chest height. • The Side-Recess (Lahd): It is Sunnah to make a side-recess (Lahd) toward the Qiblah wall of the grave if the soil is firm. A straight ditch-like trench (Shaqq) is not preferred unless the soil is very loose. • Lowering the Body: The body must be lowered from the Qiblah side of the grave, and those lowering it recite: "Bismillahi wa 'ala millati Rasulillah" (In the name of Allah, and upon the way of the Messenger of Allah). • Postures: The body must be laid on its right side facing the Qiblah, and the shroud knots must be untied. • Closing the Recess: The Lahd is sealed using unbaked clay bricks (Labin) or reeds; using baked bricks or wood is disliked (Makruh) unless necessitated by wet soil. • Mounding: The earth is piled and shaped like a camel's hump (Tashnīm); making the grave flat or square is legally disliked.
