Lesson

1. The Obligation of Sequence (al-Tartib)

التَّرْتِيبُ بَيْنَ الْفَائِتَةِ وَالْوَقْتِيَّةِ مُسْتَحَقٌّ لَازِمٌ، وَبَيْنَ الْفَوَائِتِ نَفْسِهَا • The Obligation of Sequence: In Hanafi jurisprudence, maintaining the correct sequence (al-Tartib) between missed prayers (al-Fawa'it) and the current obligatory prayer (al-Waqtiyyah), as well as among the missed prayers themselves, is strictly obligatory and necessary (Wajib/Lazim). • Example: If a worshipper misses the Fajr prayer, they are legally required to make up that Fajr prayer before performing the current Zuhr prayer. • If they perform the Zuhr prayer while remembering the missed Fajr prayer (when the current time is wide), their Zuhr prayer becomes temporarily suspended (mawquf) and must be repeated.

2. Order-Dropping Trigger 1: Narrowness of Time

وَيَسْقُطُ التَّرْتِيبُ بِأَحَدِ ثَلَاثَةِ أَشْيَاءَ: ضِيقِ الْوَقْتِ الْمُسْتَحَبِّ فِي الْأَصَحِّ • Narrowness of Time: If the time remaining for the current obligatory prayer is so narrow that performing the missed prayer first would cause the current prayer's time to expire. • The Ruling: Under this critical time constraint, the obligation of sequence completely drops. The worshipper must perform the current prayer first to protect it from expiring. • The Most Correct Opinion (al-Asahh): This narrowness refers specifically to the narrowness of the recommended time window (al-Waqt al-Mustahabb), not merely the absolute end of the time.

3. Triggers 2 & 3: Forgetfulness & Accumulation to 6+ Prayers

وَالنِّسْيَانِ، وَإِذَا صَارَتِ الْفَوَائِتُ سِتًّا غَيْرَ الْوِتْرِ • Trigger 2 - Forgetfulness (al-Nisyan): If a worshipper forgetfully performs the current prayer while completely failing to remember that they have a missed prayer, the sequence drops due to forgetfulness, and the current prayer is fully valid. • Trigger 3 - Accumulation of Missed Prayers: If the total number of accumulated missed prayers reaches six (6) or more, excluding the Witr prayer. • The Ruling: Once missed prayers accumulate to six, the requirement of sequence is suspended. The worshipper may perform their current prayers without making up the missed ones first. • The Witr make-up is obligatory like Fard, but for the calculation of the 6-prayer accumulation threshold, only the five daily prayers are counted.

4. Non-Return of Sequence on Partial Make-ups

وَلَمْ يَعُدِ التَّرْتِيبُ بِعَوْدِهَا إِلَى الْقِلَّةِ • Juristic Rule of Non-Return: If a worshipper had six or more missed prayers (which successfully suspended their sequence requirement), and they subsequently make up some of them until fewer than six missed prayers remain. • The Ruling: The sequence obligation does NOT return merely by the accumulated missed prayers decreasing back below the six-prayer threshold. • The Boundary: The sequence obligation remains suspended and will only return once the worshipper has completely cleared all their lifetime missed prayers to zero.

5. Temporary Suspension (Fasaad Mawquf) of Prayer

فَلَوْ صَلَّى فَرْضًا ذَاكِرًا فَائِتَةً وَلَوْ وِتْرًا فَسَدَ فَرْضُهُ فَسَادًا مَوْقُوفًا • State of Suspended Validity: If a worshipper performs a current Fard prayer while fully remembering a missed prayer (even if it was Witr), and the current time is wide. • The Ruling: The performed Fard prayer enters a state of temporary suspension of validity (Fasaad Mawquf). • Method of Resolution: ◦ If they make up that remembered missed prayer shortly after, the suspended current prayer immediately becomes null and void (invalid) and must be repeated. ◦ If they continue to perform current prayers without making up the missed one until the total number of consecutive performed prayers reaches six (6): all those performed prayers automatically become fully valid, and the suspension drops.

Practice questions

Question 3

  • If the traveler is riding a beast.
  • Under narrowness of time, forgetfulness, or when missed prayers reach six or more.
  • If the prayer is performed in congregation.
  • Only during rainy days.
