1. Basic Recognition of Haram

Haram is a ruling of Shari'ah prohibition in which the act is not permitted. In Hanafi terminology, every use of Makruh is not simply labelled Haram in this same sense.

Here, Haram is basically recognized by prohibition; the evidence establishing it and its other technical rulings belong to a separate juristic discussion.

2. Basic Recognition of Makruh

Makruh is a juristic term in which leaving an act is sought. Hanafi Fiqh has further types of Makruh, and they do not all carry the same degree of seriousness. Therefore, Makruh is neither treated everywhere as another name for Haram nor as one uniformly mild category.

The particular meaning of Makruh is understood from its juristic context and reliable explanation; the details of its types will be studied in a later Fiqh course.

3. The Seven-Category Map
