1. Purifying Visible Impurities

Source text وَتَطْهُرُ النَّجَاسَةُ الْمُرْئِيَّةُ بِزَوَالِ عَيْنِهَا وَلَوْ بِمَرَّةٍ عَلَى الصَّحِيحِ... • Najasah Mar'iyyah (Visible Impurity): Filth that has a visible physical body, substance, or stain (such as blood or feces). • The Purification Rule: The purification is achieved solely by removing the physical substance itself (zawāl 'aynihā). • Washing Count: According to the correct (al-Sahīh) Hanafi position, if the physical substance is completely removed in a single wash, the area is legally pure, and repeating the wash three times is not mandatory.

2. Excusing Stubborn Stains

Source text وَلَا يَضُرُّ بَقَاءُ أَثَرٍ شَقَّ زَوَالُهُ... • Stubborn Stains: If the physical substance has been washed thoroughly with water and soap, but a stubborn trace of color or smell remains that is extremely difficult to remove ('asura zawāluhu): • The Ruling: This remaining stain or trace does NOT harm the validity of prayer. The garment is legally classified as pure. • One is not required to damage or tear the garment to remove an indelible stain.

3. Purifying Invisible Impurities

Source text وَغَيْرُ الْمُرْئِيَّةِ بِغَسْلِهَا ثَلَاثًا، وَالْعَصْرِ كُلَّ مَرَّةٍ... • Najasah Ghayr Mar'iyyah (Invisible Impurity): Filth that leaves no visible physical body or stain once dried (such as urine or alcohol). • The Purification Rule: To purify such contamination, one must wash the garment three times, squeezing ('asr) it thoroughly after each wash. • Squeezing Strength: One must squeeze with normal, reasonable strength on each wash until the dripping of water drops ceases.

4. Purifying Non-Squeezable Items

Source text وَفِي غَيْرِ الْمَنْعَصِرِ طَهَارَتُهُ بِغَسْلِهِ ثَلَاثًا مَعَ التَّجْفِيفِ كُلَّ مَرَّةٍ • Non-Squeezable Items: Items that cannot be squeezed without damage (such as heavy leather gear, thick carpets, or rigid footwear): • The Purification Process: ◦ Wash the item three times. ◦ After each wash, leave the item to drip-dry completely (tajfīf) until all dripping water stops before performing the next wash. • Upon drying after the third wash, the item is legally purified.

5. Wiping Smooth Surfaces & Leather Friction

Source text وَيُطَهَّرُ السَّيْفُ وَنَحْوُهُ بِالْمَسْحِ، وَيُطَهَّرُ الْخُفُّ بِالدَّلْكِ مِنَ النَّجَاسَةِ الْمُتَجَسِّدَةِ • Wiping Smooth Surfaces: Smooth, non-porous items that do not absorb liquids (such as steel swords, glass, mirrors, or glazed vessels): ◦ Wiping them thoroughly with a clean cloth or dry soil is sufficient to purify them. • Leather Friction (Dalk): If leather socks (Khuffayn) or shoes are contaminated with a solid impurity that has a physical body (such as feces or dung), once dried: ◦ Rubbing them firmly against the ground until no trace remains is legally sufficient to purify them. ◦ However, if the contamination is liquid (such as urine), it must be washed with water.

Practice questions

Question 4

For non-squeezable items (like heavy leather or carpets), washing them three times and allowing them to drip-dry completely between each wash is legally sufficient.

Question 5

How are smooth, non-porous surfaces like steel swords or glass mirrors purified according to the text?

  • They must be soaked in vinegar for 3 hours.

  • They can never be purified once contaminated.
