1. What Mubah Means

Mubah is the Shari'ah ruling category in which an act may either be done or left.

In Mubah, neither doing the act nor leaving it is required.

2. How Mubah Differs from Other Categories

Farz and Wajib require an act, Sunnah and Mustahabb encourage it, and Makruh or Haram involve avoiding it. Mubah is identified by permission both to do and to leave the act.

These categories must be kept distinct; Mubah is not automatically required, recommended, disliked, or prohibited.

3. Unknown Does Not Mean Mubah

If we do not know the Shari'ah ruling of an act, our lack of knowledge does not allow us to label it Mubah. Mubah is an established category, not a guess.

A responsible statement about an unknown ruling is: I do not know its ruling.

4. Accurate Information in a Real Case

The basic meaning of Mubah is permission. Before calling a real act Mubah, however, its accurate description and relevant circumstances must be known, and its ruling is then understood through reliable scholarly guidance.

Classifying a real case requires its actual circumstances and reliable scholarly guidance.
