1. The Book of Purification: Water as the Default Medium

• Core Rule: In Islamic law, the primary and default medium used to remove both physical filth (Najasah) and ritual impurity (Hadath) is water. • Unaltered State: Any water that remains on its original state of creation, retaining its natural characteristics, is pure and possesses the capacity to purify. • Liquids other than water (such as tea, rosewater, or juices) cannot be legally used to perform ablution (Wudu) or bath (Ghusl).

2. The Seven Types of Legally Valid Waters

Source text الْمِيَاهُ الَّتِي يَجُوزُ التَّطْهِيرُ بِهَا سَبْعَةُ مِيَاهٍ... • The text of Noor-ul-Idah lists seven categories of water that are valid for performing ritual purification: ◦ Ma' al-Sama': Rainwater ◦ Ma' al-Bahr: Seawater (saltwater) ◦ Ma' al-Nahr: River water (flowing freshwater) ◦ Ma' al-Bi'r: Well water ◦ Ma' al-'Ayn: Spring water ◦ Ma' Daba min al-Thalj: Melted snow ◦ Ma' Daba min al-Barad: Melted hail

3. Juristic Proofs for Seawater & Flowing Water

• Seawater: Historically, some individuals hesitated to use seawater due to its high salinity. However, the text confirms its validity based on the Prophetic statement: "Its water is purifying, and its dead creatures are lawful." • Rainwater, seawater, river water, well water, melted snow and hail, and spring water may be used for purification.

4. Understanding Absolute Water (Ma' al-Mutlaq)

Source text وَهُوَ الْمَاءُ الْمُطْلَقُ الَّذِي بَقِيَ عَلَى خِلْقَتِهِ • Absolute Water: Ma' al-Mutlaq is water that remains in its natural state of creation, and is referred to simply as "water" without any restrictive, permanent prefix. • Restricted Water (Ma' al-Muqayyad): ◦ Any liquid permanently linked to an additive such that it can no longer be called "water" on its own (e.g., rosewater (Ma' al-Ward), melon juice, or squeezed extracts). ◦ Ruling: Performing Wudu or Ghusl with Restricted Water is legally invalid.

5. Genitive Rules & Wudu with Unauthorized Water

• The Genitive Rule: The genitive relationship in terms like "Well Water" (Ma' al-Bi'r) or "Rainwater" (Ma' al-Sama') is solely for identification (Ta'rif), not restriction (Taqyid). Thus, they remain Absolute Water. This contrasts with "Rosewater" (Ma' al-Ward), which is permanently restricted. • Water Belonging to Others: If a person performs ablution with water belonging to another without permission, is the purification valid? According to the commentary, the purification is legally valid, though utilizing another's property without authorization constitutes a sin.
