1. Post-Natal Bleeding (Lochia): Definitions & Durations

Source text وَالنِّفَاسُ: هُوَ الدَّمُ الْخَارِجُ عَقِبَ الْوِلَادَةِ، وَلَا حَدَّ لِأَقَلِّهِ، وَأَكْثَرُهُ أَرْبَعُونَ يَوْمًا • Definition: Post-natal bleeding (Nifas / lochia) is the blood discharged from the uterus immediately following childbirth. • Minimum Duration: There is no minimum limit for lochia. ◦ If a woman experiences bleeding for only a brief moment, or even no blood at all after delivery, she is legally pure once the birth process is completed. • Maximum Duration: The absolute maximum duration of lochia is forty (40) days. ◦ Any discharge continuing beyond the 40-day threshold is classified as chronic bleeding (Istihadah), and the lochia is ruled to have ended at the 40-day mark.

2. Lochia: Legal Restrictions & Exclusions

• Ruling: The legal rulings and restrictions governing lochia are identical to those of menstruation. • Prohibited Acts: During lochia, it is strictly prohibited to perform Salah, fast, enter a mosque, circumambulate the Ka'bah, recite or touch the Quran without a cover, or engage in sexual intimacy. • Forgiveness & Makeups: ◦ Prayers missed during the lochia days are completely forgiven and require no makeup (Qada). ◦ Fasts missed during Ramadan due to lochia must be made up (Qada) later.

3. Chronic Bleeding (Istihadah): Legal Definition

Source text وَالِاسْتِحَاضَةُ: دَمٌ نَقَصَ عَنْ ثَلَاثَةِ أَيَّامٍ أَوْ زَادَ عَلَى عَشَرَةٍ... • Scenarios of Istihadah: ◦ Any bleeding that stops before completing the 3-day minimum requirement of menses. ◦ Any bleeding that exceeds the 10-day maximum limit of menses. ◦ Any bleeding that exceeds the 40-day maximum limit of post-natal bleeding. • Istihadah is blood outside the legal limits of menstruation and post-natal bleeding; the supplied text also treats bleeding during pregnancy as istihadah.

4. Istihadah: Status and Worship Obligations

Source text وَحُكْمُ الِاسْتِحَاضَةِ كَالرُّعَافِ الدَّائِمِ لَا يَمْنَعُ صَلَاةً وَلَا صَوْمًا وَلَا وَطْئًا • The Legal Analogy: In Islamic law, the status of chronic bleeding (Istihadah) is legally equivalent to a continuous nosebleed (al-Ru'af al-Da'im). • Legal Implications: ◦ It does NOT excuse the woman from performing her daily prayers. ◦ It does NOT excuse her from fasting during Ramadan. ◦ Engaging in marital intimacy/intercourse is fully permissible during this state. ◦ The woman is fully permitted to recite the Quran, touch it (with Wudu), and enter the mosque.

5. Excused Person (Ma'dhur): Wudu & Expiration Rules

Source text وَتَتَوَضَّأُ الْمُسْتَحَاضَةُ وَمَنْ بِهِ عُذْرٌ... لِوَقْتِ كُلِّ فَرْضٍ • Excused Individuals: A woman suffering from constant chronic bleeding, or any male/female experiencing continuous urinary incontinence (salas bawl), ongoing flatulence, or constant weeping wounds. • The Obligatory Method: The excused person (Ma'dhur) must perform a fresh Wudu for the time of every obligatory prayer (li-waqti kulli fard). • Wudu Expiration Rules: ◦ With this Wudu, they can perform as many Fard or Nafl prayers as they wish within that specific prayer time. ◦ Their Wudu is not invalidated by their ongoing excuse (e.g., the bleeding or dripping). ◦ The moment that specific prayer time ends/expires, their Wudu is automatically invalidated. They must perform a fresh Wudu for the next prayer.
