1. The Legal Status & Core Formula

يَجِبُ سَجْدَتَانِ بِتَشَهُّدٍ وَتَسْلِيمٍ لِتَرْكِ وَاجِبٍ سَهْوًا، وَإِنْ تَكَرَّرَ • Juristic Status: Performing the prostration of forgetfulness (Sujud al-Sahw) is Wajib (obligatory) when a necessary act (Wajib) is omitted forgetfully during prayer. • The Core Formula: It consists structurally of performing two prostrations, reciting Tashahhud, and performing Salaam. • Multiple Mistakes: If multiple necessary acts are omitted forgetfully in a single prayer, only two prostrations are performed at the end. Multiple errors do not multiply the prostrations. • If a necessary act (Wajib) is omitted intentionally ('Amdan), Sujud al-Sahw cannot rectify it; a full repetition of the prayer is legally required.

2. Timing & Phrasing: Performing After One Salaam

وَيَكْتَفِي بِتَسْلِيمَةٍ وَاحِدَةٍ عَنْ يَمِينِهِ فِي الْأَصَحِّ • The Timing: Sujud al-Sahw is performed after reciting the Tashahhud in the final sitting, and immediately after performing only one Salaam (Taslimah wahidah) to the right side. • The Most Correct Opinion (al-Asahh): The authenticated and preferred Hanafi position establishes that the worshipper must make only a single Salaam to the right before proceeding to the two prostrations. • The Procedure: Worshippers make one Salaam to the right, perform two prostrations, sit back down to recite the Tashahhud, send blessings (Salawat), make supplication (Du'a), and conclude with Salaam on both sides.

3. Core Triggers of Sujud al-Sahw

وَسَبَبُهُ: تَأْخِيرُ فَرْضٍ، أَوْ تَقْدِيمُهُ، أَوْ تَأْخِيرُ وَاجِبٍ، أَوْ تَرْكُهُ سَهْوًا • Core Triggers: Sujud al-Sahw is triggered forgetfully by four fundamental occurrences: ◦ Delaying a Fard act (Takhkhir Fard): Carrying out an obligatory act late (e.g., delaying the bowing posture). ◦ Preceding a Fard act (Taqdim Fard): Carrying out an obligatory act prematurely. ◦ Delaying a Wajib act: Delaying a necessary act (e.g., delaying sitting for the first Tashahhud). ◦ Omitting a Wajib act (Tark Wajib): Completely omitting a necessary act forgetfully (e.g., forgetting to append a Surah after Fatihah). • The Rule: Completely omitting a Fard act (like Ruku' or Sujud entirely) cannot be rectified by Sujud al-Sahw; the prayer is invalid unless the Fard itself is performed.

4. Dropping Triggers: External Disruptions

وَيَسْقُطُ سُجُودُ السَّهْوِ بِطُلُوعِ الشَّمْسِ فِي الْفَجْرِ، وَبِاحْمِرَارِهَا فِي الْعَصْرِ، وَبِوُجُودِ مَا يَمْنَعُ الْبِنَاءَ • Dropping Triggers: The obligation to perform Sujud al-Sahw drops completely under specific external disruptions, and the worshipper simply concludes with Salaam: ◦ Sunrise: The sun rising during the final sitting of the Fajr prayer before the prostrations are made (this invalidates the Fajr unit entirely). ◦ Sunset: The sun turning yellow or setting during the final sitting of the Asr prayer. ◦ Jumu'ah Zenith: The time of Asr entering during the final sitting of the Friday prayer. ◦ Disruptive Actions: Carrying out any action that prevents continuing the prayer structurally (such as experiencing involuntary minor impurity or speaking).
