Lesson

1. Recommended Times: General Principles

• The Concept of Mustahabbat: Although obligatory prayers are legally valid anytime within their established astronomical windows, the author details specific sub-windows where performing them is legally preferred and highly recommended for greater reward. • Cloudy Day Exception (Yawm al-Ghaym): ◦ On overcast or cloudy days, the standard recommended timings for various prayers are reversed. ◦ Juristic Reason: This adjustment is implemented as a precaution to prevent worshippers from accidentally performing a prayer before its time enters or after it ends due to the absence of clear solar/shadow indicators.

2. Recommended Times: Fajr and Zuhr

وَيُسْتَحَبُّ الإِسْفَارُ بِالْفَجْرِ لِلرِّجَالِ... وَالإِبْرَادُ بِالظَّهْرِ فِي الصَّيْفِ وَتَعْجِيلُهُ فِي الشِّتَاءِ • Recommended Time for Fajr: ◦ For Men: It is recommended in all seasons to perform Fajr during Isfar (when the sky brightens). This brightness is defined as having enough light that if a mistake occurs, the prayer can be repeated with a fresh Wudu according to the Sunnah before sunrise. ◦ For Women: It is always recommended for women to perform Fajr in the dark (Ghalas). ◦ Muzdalifah Exception: For the pilgrim at Muzdalifah, performing Fajr in the dark is recommended to maximize the time available for Hajj rituals. • Recommended Time for Zuhr: ◦ In Summer: It is recommended to cool the prayer down (Ibrad), meaning delaying Zuhr until the intense heat of midday decreases. ◦ In Winter: It is recommended to hasten Zuhr immediately when the time enters.

3. Recommended Times: Asr and Maghrib

وَتَأْخِيرُ الْعَصْرِ مَا لَمْ تَتَغَيَّرِ الشَّمْسُ... وَتَعْجِيلُ الْمَغْرِبِ • Recommended Time for Asr: ◦ It is recommended to delay Asr in all seasons to the latter portion of its time. ◦ The Condition: This delay is only recommended as long as the sun does not change color or turn yellow/pale (Asfrirar). Worshippers must conclude Asr before the yellowing window enters. • Recommended Time for Maghrib: ◦ It is recommended to hasten Maghrib in both summer and winter. Worshippers should perform Maghrib immediately upon sunset; delaying it unnecessarily is disliked.

4. Recommended Times: Isha and Witr

وَتَأْخِيرُ الْعِشَاءِ إِلَى ثُلُثِ اللَّيْلِ، وَتَأْخِيرُ الْوِتْرِ إِلَى آخِرِ اللَّيْلِ لِمَنْ يَثِقُ بِالِانْتِبَاهِ • Recommended Time for Isha: ◦ It is recommended to delay Isha until one-third of the night (Thuluth al-Layl) has passed. ◦ Delaying it up to midnight is permissible (Mubah), but delaying past midnight without a valid excuse is disliked due to the risk of sleeping past Fajr. • Recommended Time for Witr: ◦ For those confident of waking up: A person who is confident of waking up in the last part of the night should delay Witr to the last portion of the night. ◦ For those not confident of waking up: A person who fears they will sleep through the night must perform Witr before sleeping.

5. Reversed Timings on Cloudy Days

وَتَعْجِيلُ الْعَصْرِ وَالْعِشَاءِ فِي يَوْمِ الْغَيْمِ، وَتَأْخِيرُ الْفَجْرِ وَالظُّهْرِ وَالْمَغْرِبِ وَالْوِتْرِ فِيهِ • The Cloudy Day Rule: On overcast days, to prevent invalidations due to timing uncertainty, the recommended timings are organized as follows: ◦ Prayers to Hasten: ◦ Asr and Isha: It is recommended to hasten these two prayers immediately upon their estimated start times, avoiding the risk of sunset or deep night transition during uncertainty. ◦ Prayers to Delay: ◦ Fajr, Zuhr, Maghrib, and Witr: It is recommended to delay these four prayers. This ensures absolute certainty that their valid windows have actually entered, preventing the critical error of praying before the time enters.
