1. Following the Imam (Iqtida'): Heel Alignment

وَشُرُوطُ صِحَّةِ الِاقْتِدَاءِ... أَنْ لَا يَتَقَدَّمَ الْمَاقْتَدِي عَلَى إِمَامِهِ بِعَقِبِهِ • Al-Iqtida': The legal act of a follower aligning and subjecting his prayer movements to the actions of the Imam. • The Rule of Heel Alignment: ◦ The follower is legally required to ensure that his heel ('Aqib) does not extend forward beyond the physical heel of the Imam. ◦ If the follower's heel is positioned ahead of the Imam's heel, his connection (Iqtida') is invalidated, rendering his prayer null and void. ◦ The Exception: If the follower has larger feet and his toes extend beyond the Imam's toes, but his heels remain behind the Imam's heels, his prayer remains valid.

2. Gender-Based Row Hierarchies

وَيَقِفُ الرِّجَالُ ثُمَّ الصِّبْيَانُ ثُمَّ الْخُنَاثَى ثُمَّ النِّسَاءُ • Hierarchy of Rows: When establishing the congregation, the rows must be organized in the following precise, mandatory order: ◦ Al-Rijal (Adult Men): The first and primary rows are reserved exclusively for adult males. ◦ Al-Sibyan (Immature Boys): Worshipping children stand in the rows directly behind the adult men. ◦ Al-Khunatha (Hermaphrodites): Hermaphrodites stand behind the children's rows. ◦ Al-Nisa' (Women): Women stand in the final rows at the very back of the congregation. • This layout maintains the pristine physical organization and sacred boundaries of congregational worship.

3. Women-Only Congregations

فَإِنْ فَعَلْنَ يَقِفُ الْإِمَامُ وَسَطَهُنَّ كَالْعُرَاةِ • The Core Ruling: Establishing a women-only congregation without a male Imam is classified as prohibitively disliked (Makruh Tahriman). • Imam's Position inside the Row: ◦ If women do perform their own congregation (despite the disapproval), the female Imam must NOT stand forward in front of the row. ◦ Instead, she must stand directly in the center of the first row (wasatahunna). ◦ Juristic Analogy: This positioning is identical to the legal rule prescribed for a congregation of naked individuals, where their Imam stands inside the row to preserve modesty.

4. Barriers and Spaces Between Worshippers

وَلَا يَصِحُّ الِاقْتِدَاءِ بِوَاقِفٍ فِي زَوْرَقٍ... وَلَا طَرِيقٍ تَمُرُّ فِيهِ الْعَجَلَةُ • Invalidating Barriers: Specific physical distances and obstacles separating the Imam and the follower invalidate the connection (Iqtida'): ◦ A Public Road (Tariq): If a public highway wide enough for carts/vehicles to pass separates the Imam and the follower, the following is invalid. ◦ A Large Canal (Nahr): If a canal or body of water wide enough for boats to navigate separates them, the following is invalid. ◦ Excessive Space: Outside the mosque, if an empty space wide enough to accommodate two full rows separates the follower from the row in front of him, the connection is severed.
