1. The Legal Definition of the Martyr (Shahid)

الشَّهِيدُ الْمَقْتُولُ بِأَجَلِهِ عِنْدَنَا أَهْلُ السُّنَّةِ، وَالشَّهِيدُ: مَنْ قَتَلَهُ أَهْلُ الْحَرْبِ أَوْ أَهْلُ الْبَغْيِ أَوْ قُطَّاعُ الطَّرِيقِ، أَوِ اللُّصُوصُ فِي مَنْزِلِهِ لَيْلًا وَلَوْ بِمِثْقَلٍ، أَوْ وُجِدَ فِي الْمَعْرَكَةِ وَبِهِ أَثَرٌ، أَوْ قَتَلَهُ مُسْلِمٌ ظُلْمًا عَمْدًا بِمُحَدَّدٍ • Sunni Creed: According to the Creed of Ahl al-Sunnah wa-l-Jama'ah, the martyr dies exactly at his pre-ordained span of life (Ajal). • The Legal Definition: In Hanafi jurisprudence, a sane, adult, ritually pure Muslim is classified as a martyr (Shahid) if they are killed under the following conditions: ◦ Killed by non-Muslim combatants (Ahl al-Harb), rebels, or highway bandits. ◦ Killed at night inside their own home by thieves, even if killed using a heavy, blunt object. ◦ Found dead on the battlefield after combat, displaying visible wounds or bloodstains. ◦ Unjustly and intentionally killed by a fellow Muslim using a sharp, piercing weapon (Muhaddad) that necessitates retaliation (Qisas).

2. Exemption from Ghusl and Retaining Shrouds

فَيُكْفَنُ بِدَمِهِ وَثِيَابِهِ، وَيُصَلَّى عَلَيْهِ بِلَا غُسْلٍ، وَيُنْزَعُ عَنْهُ مَا لَيْسَ صَالِحًا لِلْكَفَنِ كَالْفَرْوِ وَالْحَشْوِ وَالسِّلَاحِ وَالدِّرْعِ، وَيُزَادُ وَيُنْقَصُ فِي ثِيَابِهِ • Exemption from Ghusl: The martyr is not washed; they must be buried in their blood-stained state of martyrdom. • Requirement of Janazah: The Janazah (funeral) prayer is strictly obligatory over the martyr (the prayer is not waived). • The Shroud: The martyr is shrouded in their own bloodied clothes. • Garment Adjustments: ◦ Items unsuitable for serving as a shroud must be removed: such as weapons, fur coats (Farw), armor plate (Dir'), heavily padded garments, and leather socks. ◦ If their personal clothes fall short of the Sunnah shroud count, extra sheets are added; if they exceed the Sunnah count, the excess is removed.

3. Washing Rules for the Listed Cases

وَلَمْ يَرِثْ بَعْدَ انْقِضَاءِ الْحَرْبِ بِأَنْ أَكَلَ أَوْ شَرِبَ أَوْ تَدَاوَى • Cases Requiring Washing: A minor, an insane person, or a person who dies in Janabah, menstruation, or post-natal bleeding is washed. • Wounded Person: If the wounded person eats, drinks, receives treatment, or meets another condition listed by the source before death, apply the source's washing ruling.
