Lesson

1. The Legality and Setup of the Fear Prayer

هِيَ جَائِزَةٌ بِحُضُورِ عَدُوٍّ... وَإِذَا تَنَازَعَ الْقَوْمُ فِي الصَّلَاةِ خَلْفَ إِمَامٍ وَاحِدٍ فَيَجْعَلُهُمْ طَائِفَتَيْنِ • Condition: The Fear Prayer is permitted in the presence of an enemy. • Two Cohorts: If the troops dispute over praying behind one Imam, the Imam divides them into two cohorts and follows the source-stated procedure.

2. Troop Division and the First Cohort's Prayer

فَيَجْعَلُهُمْ طَائِفَتَيْنِ طَائِفَةً بِإِزَاءِ الْعَدُوِّ، وَيُصَلِّي بِالْأُخْرَى رَكْعَةً مِنَ الثُّنَائِيَّةِ وَرَكْعَتَيْنِ مِنَ الرُّبَاعِيَّةِ، وَتَمْضِي هَذِهِ إِلَى الْعَدُوِّ مُشَاةً • The Split: The Imam places the first cohort (Group 1) at the front line to secure the positions facing the enemy, and aligns the second cohort (Group 2) behind him to commence the prayer. • The First Unit(s): The Imam leads Group 2: ◦ In a two-rak'ah prayer (such as Fajr or travel-shortened prayers), he leads them in one unit. ◦ In a four-rak'ah prayer (when resident), he leads them in two units. • Departing to the Post: Upon completing this first unit/units, this cohort does not say Salaam. Instead, they immediately depart on foot to take over the battle line facing the enemy.

3. The Second Cohort and the Imam's Conclusion

وَجَاءَتْ تِلْكَ، فَصَلَّى بِهِمْ مَا بَقِيَ، وَسَلَّمَ وَحْدَهُ، فَذَهَبُوا إِلَى الْعَدُوِّ مُشَاةً، وَجَاءَتِ الْأُولَى فَصَلُّوا مَا بَقِيَ بِقِرَاءَةٍ • Arrival of the Second Cohort: Now, the first cohort (Group 1), which was securing the defensive line, returns and aligns behind the Imam. • Completing the Congregation: The Imam leads them through the remaining portion of his prayer (one unit for travel, two units for resident). • Imam's Salaam: The Imam alone utters the Salaam to complete his prayer (the followers do not say Salaam yet). • The Second Transition: Immediately upon the Imam's Salaam, this cohort (Group 1) departs swiftly on foot without saying Salaam to hold the battle line.

4. Follower Completions: Lahiq and Masbuq Classifications

وَجَاءَتِ الْأُولَى فَصَلُّوا مَا بَقِيَ بِقِرَاءَةٍ بِلَا سَلَامٍ، ثُمَّ جَاءَتِ الْأُخْرَى فَصَلُّوا بِقِرَاءَةٍ • First Cohort's Completion (Lahiq): The first cohort (Group 1) returns to the prayer mat and completes its remaining units without reciting the Quran. Legally, they hold the status of a Lahiq (one who missed units while technically remaining part of the active congregation). • Second Cohort's Completion (Masbuq): Subsequently, the second cohort (Group 2) returns to complete its missed units with full Quranic recitation. Legally, they hold the status of a Masbuq (latecomer who must recite when finishing missed units). • Conclusion: Both cohorts eventually say Salaam independently to complete their prayers, achieving the source-stated procedure without exposing the battlefield defenses.

5. Extreme Battlefield Fear and Riding Postures

وَإِنِ اشْتَدَّ الْخَوْفُ صَلَّوْا رُكْبَانًا فُرَادَى بِالْإِيمَاءِ إِلَى أَيِّ جِهَةٍ قَدَرُوا، وَلَمْ تَجُزْ بِلَا حُضُورِ عَدُوٍّ • Extreme Fear: When fear is intense, worshippers pray individually on their riding mounts, using gestures and facing any direction they are able. • Condition: This source-stated form depends on the presence of an enemy. No additional nullity or disaster rule is asserted here.
