Lesson

1. Prerequisites, Discipline, & Cause of Obligation

وَأَسْبَابُهَا أَوْقَاتُهَا • Three Prerequisites of Obligation: The absolute obligation of prayer (Salah) on any individual is dependent on three conditions: ◦ Al-Islam: Being a Muslim. ◦ Al-Bulugh: Reaching physical puberty. ◦ Al-'Aql: Possessing legal sanity. • Disciplining Children: Parents are legally required to instruct their children to pray at seven years of age, and are permitted to discipline them (lightly with the hand, strictly forbidding the use of a stick or whip) at ten years of age for neglecting it. • The Cause of Obligation: The legal cause (Sabab) that obligates the prayer is the entrance of its specific time. At the beginning of the time, the obligation is flexible and expansive (Wujub Muwassa').

2. Astronomical Boundaries of Fajr

وَالأَوْقَاتُ خَمْسَةٌ: وَقْتُ الصُّبْحِ مِنْ طُلُوعِ الْفَجْرِ الصَّادِقِ إِلَى قُبَيْلِ طُلُوعِ الشَّمْسِ • Commencement of Fajr: The valid time for the morning prayer (Fajr) begins precisely at the rising of the true dawn (Fajr Sadiq). • Defining True Dawn: This is the bright white light that appears on the eastern horizon and spreads horizontally (width-wise) across the sky. • Termination of Fajr: The time ends immediately before the very first portion of the sun begins to rise above the horizon (Qubayl Tulu' al-Shams). • Exclusion of False Dawn: The vertical, tail-like light that appears briefly and disappears before true dawn is called the false dawn (Fajr Kadhib).

3. The Juristic Dispute over Zuhr Limits

وَوَقْتُ الظُّهْرِ مِنْ زَوَالِ الشَّمْسِ إِلَى أَنْ يَصِيرَ ظِلُّ كُلِّ شَيْءٍ مِثْلَيْهِ أَوْ مِثْلَهُ سِوَى ظِلِّ الِاسْتِوَاءِ • Commencement of Zuhr: The time for the midday prayer (Zuhr) begins immediately when the sun declines past its zenith (Zawal al-Shams) toward the west. • Termination of Zuhr - The Juristic Dispute: Excluding the base shadow cast at midday when the sun is at its highest point (Zill al-Istiwa'): ◦ The Position of the Two Companions (Abu Yusuf & Muhammad): Zuhr ends when the shadow of any object becomes equal to its own height (mithlahu). (This is chosen by Imam al-Tahawi and is the the attributed position stated in the source). ◦ The Position of Imam Abu Hanifah: Zuhr ends only when the shadow of any object becomes twice its own height (mithlayhi).

4. Defining the Boundaries of Asr

وَوَقْتُ الْعَصْرِ مِنِ ابْتِدَاءِ الزِّيَادَةِ عَلَى الْمِثْلِ أَوِ الْمِثْلَيْنِ إِلَى غُرُوبِ الشَّمْسِ • Commencement of Asr: The afternoon prayer (Asr) begins the exact moment Zuhr time ends—meaning immediately when the shadow of an object exceeds its single height (according to the Companions) or double height (according to Abu Hanifah). • Termination of Asr: The time remains valid until the complete disc of the sun disappears below the horizon (Ghurub al-Shams). • The Yellowing Threshold (Asfrirar): Although the prayer remains legally valid until sunset, delaying Asr without a severe excuse until the sun loses its brilliance and turns pale/yellow is highly disliked (Makruh Tahrimi). The prayer is valid but constitutes a sin of delay.

5. Red Twilight and Maghrib Boundaries

وَالْمَغْرِبِ مِنْهُ إِلَى غُرُوبِ الشَّفَقِ الأَحْمَرِ عَلَى الْمُفْتَى بِهِ • Commencement of Maghrib: The sunset prayer (Maghrib) begins immediately when the sun has completely set below the horizon. • Termination of Maghrib: The time remains valid until the red twilight (al-Shafaq al-Ahmar) completely disappears from the western horizon. This is the legally certified, enacted verdict (al-Mufta bihi) in the school. • Twilight Analysis: ◦ After sunset, a red glow first dominates the horizon (red twilight), followed by a white glow (white twilight). The Companions ruled that Maghrib ends with the disappearance of the red glow. Scholars of preferred-verdict (Ahl al-Tarjih) certified this for practical ease.

6. Isha, Witr, & the Obligation of Ordering

وَالْعِشَاءِ وَالْوِتْرِ مِنْهُ إِلَى الْفَجْرِ، وَلَا يُقَدَّمُ الْوِتْرُ عَلَى الْعِشَاءِ لِلتَّرْتِيبِ اللَّازِمِ • Commencement of Isha: The night prayer (Isha) begins immediately following the complete disappearance of the red twilight (al-Shafaq al-Ahmar). • Termination of Isha and Witr: The valid times for both prayers remain open until the first horizontal light of true dawn (Fajr Sadiq) rises. • The Relationship between Isha and Witr (al-Tartib al-Lazim): ◦ Although the legal time frame for Witr is identical to Isha, it is invalid to perform Witr before completing the obligatory (Fard) Isha prayer. ◦ Juristic Reason: This is due to the mandatory ordering (al-Tartib al-Lazim) required between them. If a person mistakenly performs Witr first out of forgetfulness, it is excused, but doing so deliberately is invalid.

7. The Invalidity of Combining Prayers under Excuses

وَلَا يُجْمَعُ بَيْنِ فَرْضَيْنِ فِي وَقْتٍ بِعُذْرٍ إِلَّا لِلْحَاجِّ فِي عَرَفَةَ... وَمُزْدَلِفَةَ • The Fundamental Rule: A defining tenet of Hanafi jurisprudence is that combining two obligatory prayers (Fard) in a single time frame due to any worldly excuse (such as travel, sickness, torrential rain, or snow) is strictly invalid. Every prayer must be performed within its own astronomical time window. • The Only Two Legal Exceptions: Islamic law permits combining prayers at only two specific locations during the Pilgrimage (Hajj): ◦ Arafat (on the day of Hajj): Combining Zuhr and Asr during the Zuhr time window (Jam' Taqdeem), provided the pilgrim is in a state of Ihram and prays in congregation behind the Imam leading the Hajj/Arafah prayer. ◦ Muzdalifah (on the night of Hajj): Combining Maghrib and Isha during the Isha time window (Jam' Ta'kheer) after arriving in Muzdalifah.
