1. The Necessary Acts (Wajibat): Core Concept and Rules
• Juristic Status of Wajib: A necessary act (Wajib) is established by speculative proof (Daliyl Zhanniyy). • The Ruling: Intentionally omitting a Wajib act is sinful and is sinful and requires repetition; it is not the same as omission of a Fard, necessitating a full repetition (Wajib al-I'adah). • Rectification Method: If a Wajib act is omitted forgetfully (Sahwan), performing the prostration of forgetfulness (Sujud al-Sahw) at the end rectifies the prayer, removing the need for a full repetition. • The author lists eighteen (18) necessary acts (Wajibat) of prayer in Noor-ul-Idah, which we will study across this and the subsequent level.
2. Wajib 1: Recitation of Surah al-Fatihah
وَهُوَ ثَمَانِيَةَ عَشَرَ شَيْئًا: قِرَاءَةُ الْفَاتِحَةِ • Scope: Reciting Surah al-Fatihah is necessary (Wajib) in the first two rak'ahs of the obligatory (Fard) prayers, and in every rak'ah of the Witr and voluntary (Nafal) prayers. • Details: In Hanafi jurisprudence, reciting Surah al-Fatihah in the final rak'ahs of Fard prayers (e.g., the 3rd and 4th rak'ahs of Zuhr or Isha) is not Wajib, but rather classified as Sunnah/recommended. • Omission: If a worshipper forgetfully omits Surah al-Fatihah in either of the first two rak'ahs of a Fard prayer, performing Sujud al-Sahw is legally required.
3. Wajib 2: Appending a Surah or Verses
وَضَمُّ سُورَةٍ أَوْ ثَلَاثِ آيَاتٍ قَصِيرَةٍ أَوْ آيَةٍ طَوِيلَةٍ • Minimum Recitation Limit: Appending a complete Surah, or three short verses (Ayat), or one long verse equivalent in length to three short verses, is necessary (Wajib) after Surah al-Fatihah. • Operational Scope: ◦ In Fard prayers, appending a Surah is Wajib only in the first two rak'ahs. ◦ In Witr and all voluntary (Nafal) prayers, appending a Surah is Wajib in every single rak'ah. • Juristic Reason: Every two rak'ahs of voluntary prayer are legally treated as an independent prayer module; hence, appending a Surah remains necessary in all of its units.
4. Wajib 3: Appending in Non-Specified Fard Rak'ahs
فِي رَكْعَتَيْنِ غَيْرِ مُتَعَيِّنَتَيْنِ مِنَ الْفَرْضِ • The Absolute Rule: Structurally, any two rak'ahs out of the four rak'ahs of a Fard prayer can accommodate the necessary appended Surah recitation. • The Necessity of Ta'yin: Although any two units could suffice, specifying the first two rak'ahs of the Fard prayer for the Fatihah-Surah recitation is legally necessary (Wajib). • Legal Application: If a worshipper intentionally omits appending a Surah in the first two units and instead appends it in the final two units, they have violated a Wajib requirement and committed a sin.
5. Wajib 4: Appending in All Witr & Nafal Rak'ahs
وَفِي جَمِيعِ رَكَعَاتِ الْوِتْرِ وَالنَّفْلِ • Scope for Witr and Nafal: Appending a Surah after Surah al-Fatihah is necessary (Wajib) in all three rak'ahs of Witr, and in every single rak'ah of voluntary (Nafal and Sunnah) prayers. • Example: If a worshipper performs four voluntary rak'ahs after Isha, they are legally required to append a Surah in all four units. • Omission: If a worshipper forgetfully omits appending a Surah in the third rak'ah of Witr and proceeds to bowing, performing Sujud al-Sahw is necessary.
6. Wajib 5: Preceding Surah al-Fatihah
وَتَقْدِيمُ الْفَاتِحَةِ عَلَى السُّورَةِ • The Required Sequence: Worshippers are legally required (Wajib) to maintain the exact structural sequence of recitation: Surah al-Fatihah must be read completely first, and only then may the appended Surah or verses be recited. • Omission of Sequence: If a worshipper forgetfully recites the appended Surah first, and then recites Surah al-Fatihah afterward: ◦ They have violated the necessary sequence of recitation. ◦ They are legally required to perform Sujud al-Sahw at the end of the prayer. • This rule ensures that the recitation in every unit properly commences with the Mother of the Book (Umm al-Kitab).
