1. The Pillars of Prayer: Arkan vs. Shurut

• Defining Arkan (Pillars): Arkan are the essential obligatory components that form the internal reality of the prayer itself (such as bowing or prostrating). Missing any pillar invalidates the prayer entirely. • Defining Shurut (Conditions): Shurut are the mandatory prerequisites that must be met before starting the prayer and exist outside its actual performance (such as purification or facing the Qiblah). • In this level, we will study the first two internal pillars of prayer: Qiyam (Standing) and Qira'ah (Quranic Recitation).

2. Pillar 1: Standing (Qiyam) for the Capable

فَرْضِيَّةُ الْقِيَامِ لِلْقَادِرِ عَلَيْهِ فِي الْفَرْضِ وَالْوَاجِبِ • Legal Ruling of Qiyam: Standing upright (Qiyam) is strictly Fard (obligatory) in all obligatory (Fard) and necessary (Wajib) prayers (such as Witr or Eid), provided the worshipper is physically capable. • Defining Capability: A capable person is one who can stand without experiencing severe, debilitating pain, or worsening an illness. If a person is genuinely unable to stand due to illness or severe weakness, the obligation of standing is dropped. • Voluntary Prayers Exception: Performing voluntary (Nafal) prayers while sitting is permissible even if one is fully capable of standing, though standing yields double the spiritual reward.

3. The Physical Boundary of Standing

حَدُّ الْقِيَامِ أَنْ لَا تَصِلَ يَدَاهُ إِلَى رُكْبَتَيْهِ لَوْ مَدَّهُمَا • The Boundary of Qiyam: The legal boundary of a valid stand is that the worshipper must remain upright to the extent that if they were to extend their arms downward, their hands would not reach their knees. • The Bending Limit: If a worshipper bends forward so deeply while standing that their hands can touch their knees, they are legally no longer in a state of Qiyam (standing) but are closer to Ruku' (bowing), which invalidates the stand. • Leaning on Support: If a person is weak but can stand by leaning against a wall, a pillar, or a staff, it is Fard upon them to stand using that support. They are not permitted to pray sitting down directly.

4. Pillar 2: Recitation (Qira'ah) & Minimum Portion

وَالْقِرَاءَةُ: وَهِيَ فَرْضٌ، وَأَقَلُّهَا آيَةٌ كَامِلَةٌ فِي الصَّحِيحِ • Legal Ruling of Qira'ah: Reciting the Holy Quran during prayer is strictly Fard (obligatory). • Minimum Required Portion: According to the soundest and preferred Hanafi position (al-Sahih), the minimum obligatory recitation is one complete long verse or three short verses. • Footnote Clarification: Reciting merely one or two letters (such as "Nun" or "Qaf") is legally insufficient to fulfill the Fard of Qira'ah. The recited portion must consist of complete, meaningful words forming a verse.

5. Language of Recitation

وَلَا يَصِحُّ بِغَيْرِ الْعَرَبِيَّةِ إِلَّا عِنْدَ الْعَجْزِ عَنْهَا • Language of recitation: Quranic recitation in prayer is performed in Arabic. No consensus claim or learner-specific exception is added here.
