Lesson

1. Inability to Stand & Sitting with Normal Bowing/Prostration

إِذَا تَعَذَّرَ عَلَى الْمَرِيضِ الْقِيَامُ، أَوْ خَافَ زِيَادَةَ الْمَرَضِ، صَلَّى قَاعِدًا بِرُكُوعٍ وَسُجُودٍ • Physical Inability to Stand: If standing (Qiyam) is completely impossible for a sick person, or if they fear a severe increase in their illness, a delay in recovery, or unbearable pain. • Sitting Posture: Under these conditions, the sick person must perform their prayer sitting on the ground, carrying out complete bowing (Ruku') and prostration (Sujud) normally. • Method of Sitting: The sick person may sit in whichever manner is physically comfortable, though sitting in the kneeling posture of Tashahhud (Iftirash) is preferred if possible. • Omitting the obligatory standing posture (Qiyam) due to minor discomfort or mere anxiety is legally invalid.

2. Sitting and Gesturing (Ima')

وَإِنْ تَعَذَّرَ الرُّكُوعُ وَالسُّجُودُ صَلَّى قَاعِدًا بِإِيمَاءٍ، وَيَجْعَلُ سُجُودَهُ أَخْفَضَ مِنْ رُكُوعِهِ • Juristic Gesture (Ima'): If the sick person is capable of sitting but is completely unable to perform physical bowing and prostration, they must pray sitting and gesturing (Ima'). • Method of Gesturing: The person must gesture using their head. They are legally required to make the head gesture for prostration lower (Akhfadh) than the gesture for bowing. • Prohibited Raised Objects: It is highly disliked (Makruh Tahrimi) for a sick person to raise a pillow, a wooden board, or any elevated object to their forehead to prostrate upon. • If they prostrate on an elevated object but still bend their head lower for prostration than bowing, the gesture makes it valid; otherwise, the prayer is void.

3. Lying Down and Gesturing

فَإِنْ تَعَذَّرَ الْقُعُودُ أَوْمَأَ مُسْتَلْقِيًا عَلَى ظَهْرِهِ وَرِجْلَاهُ إِلَى الْقِبْلَةِ، وَيُرْفَعُ رَأْسُهُ بِمِخَدَّةٍ لِيَتَوَجَّهَ وَجْهُهُ إِلَى الْقِبْلَةِ • Lying on the Back: If the sick person is completely unable to sit up, they must perform their prayer lying down on their back and gesturing with their head. • Facing Qiblah: While lying on the back, their feet must be pointed towards the Qiblah, and their head must be raised slightly with a pillow so that their face is directed toward the Qiblah. • Lying on the Side: If they lie on their right or left side facing the Qiblah and gesture, it is legally valid; however, lying flat on the back with the face elevated is more preferred (Awna/Awla).

4. Inability to Gesture & The Drop Threshold

فَإِنْ تَعَذَّرَ الْإِيمَاءُ بِالرَّأْسِ أُخِّرَتْ الصَّلَاةُ... فَإِنْ زَادَ عَمَلُ الْإِيمَاءِ عَلَى يَوْمٍ وَلَيْلَةٍ سَقَطَ الْقَضَاءُ • Inability to Gesture with Head: If the sickness becomes so severe that the patient is unable to even gesture with their head, the prayer must be delayed. • Eye or Eyebrow Gestures: Gesturing with the eyes, eyebrows, or merely in the heart is legally invalid and unrecognized in the preferred Hanafi school. • The Obligation Drop Threshold: ◦ If the inability to gesture with the head, or state of insanity/unconsciousness, persists for more than five prayers (six or more), the obligation of making them up fully drops (is forgiven). ◦ If the condition lasts for five or fewer prayers, making up those missed prayers is strictly obligatory upon recovery.

5. Recovery and Posture Transitions

وَلَوْ صَلَّى قَاعِدًا بِرُكُوعٍ وَسُجُودٍ لِعِلَّةٍ ثُمَّ صَحَّ قَامَ وَبَنَى عَلَى صَلَاتِهِ • Recovery During Prayer: If a sick person is performing their prayer sitting down with physical bowing and prostration due to illness, and they suddenly recover their ability to stand during the prayer: ◦ They must immediately stand up and complete the remaining units standing. • Transitioning from Gesturing to Physical Action: If they were praying via head gestures, and during the prayer, they regain the ability to physically bow and prostrate: ◦ They must restart their prayer from the very beginning, as a prayer built on physical bowing/prostration cannot be legally constructed upon gestures.
