Lesson

1. The Sunnah Acts: Definition and Status

• Definition of Sunnah: Sunnah acts are those practices that the Prophet ﷺ or his Righteous Caliphs regularly maintained and established. • Status: Omitting the Sunnah acts of prayer without a valid excuse is legally disliked (Makruh), resulting in a loss of spiritual reward, though it does not invalidate the prayer itself. • Rectification Rule: Omitting a Sunnah act does not render the prayer invalid, nor does it necessitate performing Sujud al-Sahw. • The author lists fifty-one (51) Sunnah acts of prayer in Noor-ul-Idah, which we will study systematically.

2. Sunnah 1: Hand Raising Boundaries

رَفْعُ الْيَدَيْنِ لِلتَّحْرِيمَةِ حِذَاءَ الأُذُنَيْنِ لِلرَّجُلِ وَالأَمَةِ، وَحِذَاءَ الْمَنْكِبَيْنِ لِلْحُرَّةِ • Boundary for Men: Raising both hands up to the level of the earlobes (with thumbs lightly touching the lobes) during the Opening Takbir is Sunnah. • Boundary for Women: For free women, raising her hands up to the level of her shoulders is Sunnah. • The Principle: This structural distinction maintains the natural physical modesty and privacy (Sitr) appropriate for each gender.

3. Sunan 2 & 3: Finger Spreading & Follower's Alignment

وَنَشْرُ الأَصَابِعِ، وَمُقَارَنَةُ الإِحْرَامِ لإِحْرَامِ إِمَامِهِ • Sunnah 2 (Finger Spreading): Spreading the fingers naturally (Nashr al-Asabi') while raising the hands, without tightly closing them or forcefully locking them wide apart, is Sunnah. • Sunnah 3 (Opening Alignment): Aligning the follower's Opening Takbir (Muqaranat al-Ihram) with the Imam's Opening Takbir is Sunnah. • Procedure: Worshippers should commence their Opening Takbir immediately following the start of the Imam's Takbir, preventing any unnecessary chronological gap.

4. Sunnah 4: Men's Hand Placement Below the Navel

وَوَضْعُ الرَّجُلِ يَدَهُ الْيُمْنَى عَلَى الْيُسْرَى تَحْتَ سُرَّتِهِ • Sunnah for Men: For men, placing the right hand over the left below the navel (Tahta Surratihi) during the standing posture (Qiyam) is Sunnah. • The Clasping Posture (Hand Shape): ◦ Place the palm of the right hand over the back of the left hand. ◦ Form a clasping ring (Muhalliqan) using the thumb (Ibham) and pinky finger (Khinsir) of the right hand to grip the left wrist (Rusgh). ◦ Stretch the remaining three middle fingers straight along the left forearm.

5. Sunnah 5: Women's Hand Placement on the Chest

وَوَضْعُ الْمَرْأَةِ يَدَيْهَا عَلَى صَدْرِهَا مِنْ غَيْرِ تَحْلِيقٍ • Sunnah for Women: For women, placing both hands flat on her chest (Ala Sadriha) during the standing posture is Sunnah. • Distinction: ◦ The woman places her right hand flat over the left, but she does NOT form a clasping ring around the wrist. ◦ She simply rests her right hand flat over the left on her chest. • Reason: This closed posture is legally specified to maximize modesty and maintain the natural physical containment suited for her.

6. Sunan 6 & 7: Thana' and Ta'awwudh

وَالثَّنَاءُ، وَالتَّعَوُّذُ لِلْقِرَاءَةِ • Sunnah 6 (Thana'): Reciting the opening supplication of praise (Thana'), "Subhanakallahumma wa bihamdika...", silently immediately after tying the hands is Sunnah. • Sunnah 7 (Ta'awwudh): Reciting the formula of protection (Ta'awwudh), "A'udhu billahi min ash-Shaytan al-rajim...", silently before commencing the Quranic recitation in the first unit is Sunnah. • Juristic Rule: Since seeking protection is legally associated with the act of recitation itself, it is prescribed specifically for the one who is reciting.
