Lesson
1. The Sutrah: Concept and Physical Dimensions
يُنْدَبُ لِمَنْ يُصَلِّي فِي الصَّحْرَاءِ أَنْ يَتَّخِذَ أَمَامَهُ سُتْرَةً بِقَدْرِ ذِرَاعٍ • Definition of Sutrah: In open plains, deserts, or any space where people are anticipated to pass in front of a worshipper, it is recommended (Mandub) to place a physical barrier (such as a staff or post) in front of oneself; this is called a 'Sutrah'. • Dimensions of the Sutrah: ◦ Height: It must be at least one cubit (Dhira' / one cubit) high. ◦ Thickness: It should be at least as thick as a finger. • Juristic Wisdom: It acts as a clear visual boundary for passersby, protecting the worshipper's concentration from being disrupted.
2. Proper Placement of the Sutrah
وَيَقْرُبُ مِنْهَا، وَيَجْعَلُهَا عَلَى حَاجِبِهِ الْأَيْمَنِ أَوْ الْأَيْسَرِ • Proximity: The worshipper should stand close to the Sutrah (just beyond their place of prostration). • Offsetting Left or Right: The Sutrah should not be placed directly aligned with the center of the face or forehead. ◦ The Sunnah Method: Align it slightly offset with either the right eyebrow (Hajib al-Ayman) or the left eyebrow (Hajib al-Aysar). ◦ The Reason: This prevents any resemblance to idol worship, which could be suspected if one prostrates directly towards an upright object aligned with the face. • If planting a staff is physically impossible, drawing a straight line on the ground in front of the worshipper is legally sufficient.
3. Warding Off Passersby during Prayer
وَيَدْفَعُ الْمَارَّ بِالتَّسْبِيحِ أَوْ الْإِشَارَةِ، لَا بِهِمَا جَمْعًا • The Rule of Defense: If a person attempts to cross between the worshipper and their Sutrah, the worshipper is permitted to ward them off. • Two Approved Methods: ◦ Al-Tasbih (Vocal): Saying "Subhan Allah" aloud (alerting the passerby that a prayer is in progress). ◦ Al-Isharah (Gestural): Nodding the head, or raising the hand, or gesturing with the eyes to warn them to stay back. • Prohibition: Worshippers are not permitted to combine both methods (vocal and gestural) simultaneously; they must use only one. • Worshippers are strictly forbidden from physically struggling with or pushing the passerby.
4. The Sin of Passing & Impact on Prayer Validity
وَيَأْثَمُ الْمَارُّ بَيْنَ يَدَيْ الْمُصَلِّي... وَلَا تَقْطَعُ الصَّلَاةَ • The Sin of the Passerby: Crossing directly in front of a worshipper without necessity is a severe sin. ◦ It is recorded in Hadith that if the passerby knew the weight of their sin, they would prefer to stand waiting for forty rather than pass in front of a praying person. • Impact on Validity: If a human, dog, or animal passes directly in front of a worshipper: ◦ The prayer is NOT invalidated or broken; it remains legally sound and valid. ◦ The sin is borne entirely by the passerby, not the worshipper, provided the worshipper did not casually neglect placing a Sutrah.
5. Key Rulings to Remember
Review these key rulings from this level: • The classical text specifies the minimum height as one cubit ("بقدر ذراع") and the commentary establishes the thickness as that of a finger. • The Sunnah is to offset the Sutrah slightly to the right or left eyebrow ("ويجعلها على حاجبه الأيمن أو الأيسر") to avoid any resemblance to prostrating to an idol. • The text allows warding off using Tasbih or gesture, but explicitly forbids combining both ("بالتسبيح أو الإشارة، لا بهما جمعًا"). • In Hanafi jurisprudence, the passing of any creature in front of a worshipper does NOT invalidate the prayer structurally, though the passerby bears the sin ("ولا تقطع الصلاة").
