1. Sitting for Voluntary Prayers Without Excuse

يَجُوزُ النَّفْلُ قَاعِدًا مَعَ الْقُدْرَةِ عَلَى الْقِيَامِ، لَكِنْ لَهُ نِصْفُ أَجْرِ الْقَائِمِ • The Permission: It is legally permissible to perform voluntary (Nafal) prayers in a sitting posture even if one has the full physical capability to stand (Qiyam). • The Reward Penalty: If a worshipper sits to perform Nawafil without a valid physical excuse, they will receive exactly half (1/2) of the reward of a standing worshipper. • The Exception: If a worshipper is physically ill or excused and unable to stand, performing the prayer sitting grants them the complete, undiminished reward.

2. Transitioning Postures mid-Prayer

وَلَوْ ابْتَدَأَهُ قَائِمًا ثُمَّ قَعَدَ جَازَ بِلَا كَرَاهَةٍ عِنْدَ أَبِي حَنِيفَةَ • Starting Standing then Sitting: If a worshipper commences their voluntary prayer standing, and then sits down mid-prayer without an excuse: ◦ According to Imam Abu Hanifah: This posture transition is fully permissible without any legal dislike (Karahah). • Starting Sitting then Standing: Commencing the voluntary units sitting and then standing up during the recitation is permissible by consensus. • Using Supports: Leaning (al-I'timad) against a wall or a staff while sitting to perform Nawafil without a physical excuse is disliked (Makruh), though it does not invalidate the prayer.

3. Voluntary Prayers on a Riding Beast

وَيَتَنَفَّلُ رَاكِبًا خَارِجَ الْمِصْرِ أَوْمَأَ بِالسُّجُودِ أَخْفَضَ مِنْ رُكُوعِهِ • Outside City Limits: It is permissible to perform voluntary prayers while mounted on a riding beast (Dabbah) outside the city limits (Kharij al-Misr) without any specific excuse. • Gesturing (Ima'): The bowing and prostrating movements on a riding beast are executed solely through gestures. • Condition: The gesture for prostration (Sujud) must be physically lower (Akhfadh) than the gesture for bowing (Ruku'). • No Ground Prostration: Worshippers are not required to physically press their forehead against the saddle or carriage; gesturing is legally sufficient.
