1. Wiping over Leather Socks: Legality & Scope
• Legality (Mashru'iyyah): In Islamic law, wiping over leather socks (al-Mas'h 'ala al-Khuffayn) is permitted by consensus as a valid legal substitute for washing the feet during Wudu. • Scope: Wiping is valid strictly for minor ritual impurity (Hadath Asghar), which normally invalidates Wudu. • Critical Exception: Wiping over the socks is completely invalid during major ritual impurity (Hadath Akbar) that necessitates Ghusl (such as Janabah, menses, or lochia). The socks must be removed to wash the feet during Ghusl. • This legal concession applies equally to both men and women, whether resident at home or traveling.
2. Conditions of the Socks Part 1 (Prior Purity & Ankle Coverage)
Source text وَشُرُوطُ جَوَازِهِ سَبْعَةٌ: أَنْ يَلْبَسَهُمَا بَعْدَ غَسْلِ الرِّجْلَيْنِ... • There are seven strict conditions required for the validity of wiping over the socks: 1. Wearing upon Purity: The socks must be worn after washing the feet in a state of complete purification (Wudu). ◦ Subtle Ruling: If a person washes their feet, puts on the socks, and then completes the rest of their Wudu before their Wudu is invalidated, the wipe is legally valid. 2. Ankle Coverage: The socks must completely cover the ankles (Ka'bayn), which represents the obligatory boundary of the feet.
3. Conditions of the Socks Part 2 (Durability, Walkability, and Thickness)
Source text وَإِمْكَانُ مُتَابَعَةِ الْمَشْيِ فِيهِمَا فَرْسَخًا... • The remaining conditions of the socks are: ◦ Durability for Walking: They must be durable enough to allow continuous walking of one league (Farsakh / approx. 3 miles / 4.8 km) without tearing. ◦ Self-Supporting: They must be rigid or thick enough (like leather) to remain upright on the leg without being tied or bound. ◦ Water Impermeability: They must prevent water from seeping through immediately to the skin of the feet. ◦ Not made of Rigid Non-leather: They must not be crafted from rigid wood, glass, or iron, which do not conform to the legal definition of footwear for wiping.
4. The Seventh Condition: Maximum Tear Limits
Maximum Tear Limits: Each sock must be free from any tear or opening equivalent in size to three of the smallest toes of the foot. ◦ Core Law: If a single sock has a tear or hole equal to or exceeding the width of three small toes, wiping over it is invalid. ◦ Combining Tears Rule: Small separate tears on a single sock are accumulated to calculate the limit. However, tears on separate socks are not combined; if both socks have small tears that only equal three toes when summed together (e.g., one toe width on the right, two on the left), wiping remains legally valid.
5. Durations of Wiping & Start Time Calculations
Source text وَيَمْسَحُ الْمُقِيمُ يَوْمًا وَلَيْلَةً وَالْمُسَافِرُ ثَلَاثَةَ أَيَّامٍ وَلَيَالِيهَا... • Resident Duration (Muqim): A person staying at home is permitted to wipe for one day and one night (24 hours). • Traveler Duration (Musafir): A legal traveler is permitted to wipe for three days and three nights (72 hours). • The Start Time Rule: The duration of wiping does NOT start from the moment the socks are worn, nor from the time Wudu was performed. Rather, the duration begins the exact moment Wudu is first invalidated (Hadath) after wearing the socks. ◦ Example: If a person performs Wudu and puts on socks at Dhuhr time, and their Wudu is subsequently invalidated at 'Asr time, the 24 or 72-hour countdown begins strictly at 'Asr.
6. The Legal Method and Obligatory Area
Source text وَالْفَرْضُ فِي الْمَسْحِ قَدْرُ ثَلَاثِ أَصَابِعَ مِنْ أَصْغَرِ أَصَابِعِ الْيَدِ عَلَى ظَاهِرِ مُقَدَّمِ الْخُفِّ • The Obligatory Area (Fard): The obligatory minimum area for wiping is equivalent to the width of three of the smallest fingers of the hand, performed strictly on the upper surface (Thahir) of the front part of each sock. • The Sunnah Method: Worshippers spread their wet fingers out, placing them on the toe area of the sock, and draw them upward toward the shin. • Invalid Wiping Areas: ◦ Wiping the sole (underneath) of the sock is legally invalid. ◦ Wiping the heel or the vertical sides of the sock is legally invalid. ◦ Simply splashing water or wiping horizontally across the foot without spreading the fingers violates the Sunnah.
Practice questions

- Monday at 3:00 PM
- Friday at 12:00 PM
Question 2

- Less than the width of three of the smallest toes of the foot
- Exactly equal to the width of five toes
- No tears or holes are allowed at all
- Less than the size of the whole heel
Question 4
If the left sock has a tear equal to two toes and the right sock has a tear equal to two toes, wiping over them is invalid because the combined sum of tears is four toes.
Question 5
Which surface of the leather sock is obligatory to wipe during Wudu?
- The bottom sole of the sock
- The vertical sides of the sock
- The upper surface of the front part of the sock
