Lesson

1. The Four Invalidators of the Sock Wipe

Source text وَيَنْقُضُ مَسْحَ الْخُفِّ أَرْبَعَةُ أَشْيَاءَ... • The validity of wiping over leather socks is invalidated by the following four occurrences: ◦ Standard Wudu Invalidators: Anything that breaks Wudu (such as flatulence or bleeding) naturally invalidates the wipe. ◦ Removing the Socks: Removing the socks, even if only one of them is taken off. ◦ Foot Slipping Out: The foot slipping upward into the leg (Saq) of the sock such that the majority of the foot exits the foot-pocket area. ◦ Water Intrusion: Water seeping inside the sock and wetting the majority of a single foot.

2. Expiration of the Duration

Source text وَمَضِيُّ الْمُدَّةِ... • 5. Expiration of Wiping Duration: The completion of the 24-hour limit for a resident or the 72-hour limit for a traveler. • Crucial Ruling: If a person is still in a state of Wudu when their wiping duration expires: ◦ Their entire Wudu is NOT invalidated. ◦ They must simply remove their socks and wash only their feet (Ghasl al-Rijlayn). After washing the feet, their Wudu is complete and they can pray. ◦ Repeating the entire Wudu from the beginning is not required in this scenario.

3. Status Changes: Resident Becoming a Traveler

Source text وَإِنْ مَسَحَ مُقِيمٌ ثُمَّ سَافَرَ قَبْلَ تَمَامِ مُدَّتِهِ أَتَمَّ مُدَّةَ الْمُسَافِرِ • The Scenario: If a resident wears socks, begins wiping, and then departs on a legal journey before their 24-hour resident duration expires: • The Ruling: Their wiping permission is not broken; rather, their status upgrades to that of a traveler. They are now permitted to complete the full three days and three nights (72 hours) duration. ◦ Example: If they had already wiped for 10 hours as a resident, they are permitted to continue wiping for the remaining 62 hours once their journey begins.

4. Status Changes: Traveler Returning Home

Source text وَإِنْ أَقَامَ الْمُسَافِرُ بَعْدَ مَا يَمْسَحُ يَوْمًا وَلَيْلَةً نَزَعَ... • The Scenario: If a traveler returns to their home city while actively wiping over their socks: ◦ If they have already wiped for 24 hours or more: Their wiping permission expires immediately upon reaching home. They must remove their socks and wash their feet. ◦ If they have wiped for less than 24 hours: (e.g., only 15 hours), they complete the resident's limit at home. They are permitted to continue wiping for the remaining 9 hours (until the 24-hour resident limit is reached).

5. The Principle of Unified Limb Purification

• The Principle: Purification of the feet cannot be split or divided. It is legally invalid to wash one foot and wipe over the sock of the other. • The Ruling: If a person, while in a state of Wudu, removes only one of their socks: ◦ The wipe on the remaining sock is automatically invalidated. ◦ They are legally required to remove the second sock as well and wash both feet with water. ◦ Keeping one foot wiped while washing the other is strictly prohibited.
