Lesson

1. Beyond Simple Past Tense

فوائد نافعہ ◦ Simple past tense (e.g., فَعَلَ - He did) describes an action completed in the past without further details. ◦ To express precise shades of time—like "He has just done" (near), "He had done" (distant), "He used to do" (continuous), "He might have done" (doubtful), or "Would that he did" (wishful)—Arabic places specific helper words or particles before the verb. ◦ This lesson presents these 5 specialized past tenses under "فوائد نافعہ" (Useful Notes).

2. Type 1 - Maadhi Qareeb (ماضی قریب - Near Past)

◦ Maadhi Qareeb (Near Past): Denotes an action completed close to the present time. ◦ Rule: Prefix the particle قَدْ directly to the simple past tense verb. ◦ Example in this lesson's near-past construction: قَدْ ضَرَبَ (Qad Ḍaraba) - "He has hit recently". This does not define every wider use of قَدْ. ◦ This particle is non-governing; the verb's vowels remain unchanged.

3. Type 2 - Maadhi Ba'eed (ماضی بعید - Distant Past)

◦ Maadhi Ba'eed (Distant Past): Denotes an action completed in the distant past (equivalent to "had done" in English). ◦ Rule: Prefix the auxiliary verb كَانَ directly to the simple past tense. ◦ Example: كَانَ ضَرَبَ (Kaana Dharaba) - "He had hit".

4. Type 3 - Maadhi Istimraari (ماضی استمراری - Continuous/Habitual Past)

كَانَ يَضْرِبُ (Kaana Yadribu) - "He was hitting / He used to hit" (Present verb يَضْرِبُ is introduced on ). ◦ Maadhi Istimraari (Continuous/Habitual Past): Denotes an action that was ongoing, repeated, or habitual in the past (equivalent to "used to do" or "was doing"). ◦ Rule: Prefix the auxiliary verb كَانَ to the Present Verb (Mudhaari') instead of the past verb.

5. Type 4 & 5 - Doubtful (احتمالی) and Wishful (تمنائی) Past

◦ Maadhi Ihtimaali (Doubtful Past): Denotes doubt or probability about a past action. ◦ Rule: Prefix لَعَلَّمَا to the past verb. ◦ Example: لَعَلَّمَا ضَرَبَ (La'allamaa Dharaba) - "Perhaps he hit". ◦ Maadhi Tamannaa'i (Wishful/Optative Past): Expresses a wish or regret about a past action. ◦ Rule: Prefix لَيْتَمَا to the past verb. ◦ Example: لَيْتَمَا ضَرَبَ (Laytamaa Dharaba) - "Would that he had hit!".
