Lesson
1. Distribution of Heavy vs. Light Noon
◦ Heavy Noon (ثقیلہ): Enters all 14 conjugation forms (ṣīghahs) of the present verb without exception. ◦ Light Noon (خفیفہ): Enters only 8 conjugation forms (ṣīghahs). ◦ It is completely excluded from 6 forms (which we will study in the next slide).
2. Why Light Noon is Excluded from 6 Forms
بسببِ لزومِ اجتماعِ ساکنین علی غیرِ حدِّہ میان الف و نونِ خفیفہ ◦ The Rule of Exclusion: Light Noon is excluded in this paradigm where it would follow an Alif (ملحکہ الف باشد درنیاید). ◦ This is because pronouncing a silent Noon immediately after a long vowel Alif is phonetically invalid in classical Arabic (avoiding the gathering of two consecutive silent letters). ◦ This excludes Light Noon from: ◦ All 4 Dual forms (which end in Alif). ◦ Both 2 Plural Feminine forms (which insert an Alif before the Noon). ◦ Total Excluded: 4 + 2 = 6 forms.
3. Vowels Before Heavy Noon: The 5 Fathahs (پنج محل فتحہ)
◦ Rule of Fathah: In 5 conjugation forms (ṣīghahs), the letter immediately preceding the Heavy Noon carries a Fathah (زبر): FormMeaning يَفْعَلُلَيَفْعَلَنَّ (واحد مذکر غائب) تَفْعَلُلَتَفْعَلَنَّ (واحد مؤنث غائب) تَفْعَلُلَتَفْعَلَنَّ (واحد مذکر حاضر) أَفْعَلُلَأَفْعَلَنَّ (واحد متکلم) نَفْعَلُلَنَفْعَلَنَّ (جمع متکلم)
4. Vowels Before Heavy Noon: The 6 Alifs & separating alif (الفِ فاصل)
◦ Rule of Alif: In 6 conjugation forms (ṣīghahs), the letter preceding the Heavy Noon is an Alif (ا): ◦ All 4 Dual forms (where the Alif of dual is kept): e.g., لَيَفْعَلَانِّ. ◦ Both 2 Plural Feminine forms. ◦ separating alif (الفِ فاصل): In the plural feminine (e.g., يَفْعَلْنَّ → too many Noons), a special Alif is inserted to separate the subject pronoun Noon from the emphatic Noon. This is called Alif-e-Faasil. ◦ Example: يَفْعَلْنَ → لَيَفْعَلْنَانِّ.
5. Rules for Plural Masculine and Singular Feminine Addressed
◦ Plural Masculine (2 forms): The subject pronoun Waaw (وْ) is dropped. The letter before the Heavy Noon receives a Dhummah (پیش) to prove that a Waaw was dropped. ◦ Example: يَفْعَلُوْنَ → لَيَفْعَلُنَّ. ◦ Singular Feminine addressed (1 form): The subject pronoun Yaa (يْ) is dropped. The letter before the Heavy Noon receives a Kasrah (زیر) to prove that a Yaa was dropped. ◦ Example: تَفْعَلِيْنَ → لَتَفْعَلِنَّ.
6. Vowel of the Heavy Noon itself & Scan Note
◦ Vowel of Heavy Noon: The Heavy Noon itself carries a Kasrah (زیر) in the 6 forms that contain an Alif (4 duals and 2 plural feminines, e.g. لَيَفْعَلَانِّ, لَيَفْعَلْنَانِّ). ◦ In the other 8 forms, it carries a Fathah
