Lesson

1. What is Fi'l Nahi?

◦ Fi'l Nahi (فعلِ نہی - Prohibitive Verb): A verb used to forbid someone from performing an action in the future. ◦ Examples in English: "Do not help!", "Do not hit!", "Let him not listen!". ◦ For the present-verb forms treated in this lesson, This lesson gives the following construction rule.

2. The Derivation Rule (قاعدہ)

◦ To turn any present verb into prohibitive: ◦ Prefix the prohibitive particle لَا (Laa of Prohibition / لائے نہی) to the very beginning of the present verb. ◦ Place a Jazm (Sukoon) on the final letter of the verb. ◦ Example: تَفْعُلُ (You do) → Prefix لَا + Jazm → لَا تَفْعُلْ (Do not do!).

3. The Particle "Laa of Prohibition" is Governing

◦ Unlike the negative لَا (which was non-governing and caused no physical changes), the prohibitive لَا is a governing particle (عامل). ◦ It puts the verb into the jussive (Jazm) state. ◦ Just like لَمْ, the prohibitive لَا causes two structural changes: ◦ It places a Sukoon on the 5 singular forms (يَفْعُلُ → لَا يَفْعُلْ). ◦ It drops the Noon-e-I'raabi from the 7 forms (يَفْعُلَانِ → لَا يَفْعُلَا). ◦ The 2 plural feminine forms ending in نَ remain unchanged because they are indeclinable (مبنی).

4. Negation vs. Prohibition: The Visual Guide

◦ Beginners must look at the ending of the verb to distinguish Negation from Prohibition: FormMeaning Negation (لائے نفی): لَا يَنْصُرُ (ends in Dhummah)"He does not help". (No change). Prohibition (لائے نہی): لَا يَنْصُرْ (ends in Sukoon)"Let him not help!". (Jazm). Negation: لَا تَنْصُرُوْنَ (retains Noon)"You do not help". Prohibition: لَا تَنْصُرُوْا (drops Noon)"Do not help!".

5. Construction Practice with root "Dharaba"

◦ Notice that active second person/addressed forms drop the present prefix ت in commands (اِضْرِبْ), but keep the prefix ت in prohibition (لَا تَضْرِبْ). This is a crucial distinction for absolute beginners!
