1. What will we learn?

We will understand ʿazīz Hadith (عزیز) through narrator numbers. A narrator is someone who transmits a Hadith. Here, a ṭabaqah (طبقہ) means the narrators of one transmission period or generation. Each generation is counted separately.

2. An example of ʿazīz Hadith

The Prophet ﷺ said: لَا يُؤْمِنُ أَحَدُكُمْ حَتَّى أَكُونَ أَحَبَّ إِلَيْهِ مِنْ وَالِدِهِ وَوَلَدِهِ وَالنَّاسِ أَجْمَعِينَ (Sahih al-Bukhari: 15) Meaning: None of you has complete faith until I am dearer to him than his father, his children and all people. This is an example of ʿazīz Hadith. The classification concerns narrator numbers: no generation has fewer than two narrators.

3. The definition of ʿazīz Hadith

Khabar ʿazīz (خبرِ عزیز) is a Hadith with at least two narrators in every generation. • Two in every generation: this case is included. • More than two in some generations: this is also allowed. The key condition is that no generation has fewer than two.

4. More elsewhere does not make up for too few

If one generation has two narrators and another has four, the increase alone does not break this condition of ʿazīz. But if any generation has only one narrator, the condition is not fulfilled, even if other generations have many. Adding all names in the sanad is therefore not enough: consider each generation separately.

5. What does “ʿazīz” mean here?

In ordinary Urdu, an “ʿazīz friend” means a dear friend. But in khabar ʿazīz, the label concerns narrator numbers. In the Hadith about love for the Prophet ﷺ, keep two points distinct: • The saying's meaning: placing love for the Prophet ﷺ before love for all other people. • Why it is called ʿazīz: no generation has fewer than two narrators.
