Character, trust, and mutual care (Hadith 31–36)

Read the bilingual lesson for Character, trust, and mutual care (Hadith 31–36) and test your understanding with a focused quiz.

Lesson

1. In this lesson

Six reports address good character, kindness toward creation, preventing harm, trust, correcting conduct, and mutual care. One longer report has four distinct actions: read the whole expression, then study each part. Similar-looking words can differ: الْخُلُقِ concerns character, while الْخَلْقُ means creation. “One who” also differs from “from.” The examples identify actions and relationships, without deciding hidden faith or a real legal case.

2. Goodness and inward unease

الْبِرُّ حُسْنُ الْخُلُقِ، وَالْإِثْمُ مَا حَاكَ فِي صَدْرِكَ، وَكَرِهْتَ أَنْ يَطَّلِعَ عَلَيْهِ النَّاسُ (رواه مسلم) Translation Righteousness is good character; sin is what troubles your heart and what you would dislike people discovering. Arabic word or phraseMeaning الْبِرُّrighteousness; goodness حُسْنُ الْخُلُقِgood character وَالْإِثْمُand sin مَاwhat; that which is described here حُسْنُ means goodness and الْخُلُقِ means character; together they describe good character. وَ means “and.” Read the inward-unease and disclosure parts with their explanation: they do not label every nervous feeling or private matter a sin.

3. Words for unease and discovery

Arabic word or phraseMeaning حَاكَtroubled; caused inward unease فِي صَدْرِكَin your breast; here, in your heart وَكَرِهْتَand you disliked أَنْ يَطَّلِعَto discover; to become aware عَلَيْهِof it; concerning that matter النَّاسُpeople فِي means “in.” In صَدْرِكَ, صَدْرِ is the breast and the ending كَ means “your.” The context concerns inward unease, not identifying a physical illness. أَنْ يَطَّلِعَ عَلَيْهِ النَّاسُ means that people become aware of the matter. People are the ones discovering; “you” are the one disliking it in كَرِهْتَ. أَنْ connects the following action, as “to/that”; distinguish it from إِنِ, “if,” later in the lesson.

4. The limits of the inward indication

The warning concerns a heart Allah has opened and illuminated toward good. Not every feeling is accepted as a sound judgment. This inward indication is restricted to matters without clear religious guidance or scholarly agreement. Clear religious guidance or scholarly agreement cannot be changed merely by personal comfort or public approval. Scholarly agreement means agreement among religious scholars, not simply majority opinion. Dislike of disclosure also concerns upright, pious people who distinguish good conduct from bad. Feeling no shame among companions sharing the wrongdoing does not make it good. Teaching example: someone dislikes sharing a private detail publicly; that dislike alone does not establish sin. If you are unsure how these conditions apply to a matter, do not decide that it is sinful from your feelings or your companions’ approval alone. Explain the matter to a trustworthy, knowledgeable religious scholar and seek guidance.

5. Creation’s dependence and kind treatment

الْخَلْقُ عِيَالُ اللَّهِ، فَأَحَبُّ الْخَلْقِ إِلَى اللَّهِ مَنْ أَحْسَنَ إِلَى عِيَالِهِ (رواه البيهقي) Translation Creation depends on Allah’s care and provision; most beloved to Allah is the one who treats His creation well. Arabic word or phraseMeaning الْخَلْقُcreation عِيَالُ اللَّهِhere, those dependent on Allah’s care and provision فَأَحَبُّso, most beloved إِلَى اللَّهِto Allah; in Allah’s regard أَحْسَنَtreated well إِلَى عِيَالِهِtoward those dependent on His care عِيَالُ begins with a kasrah. The word describes those who are maintained and provided for. Here it expresses dependence on Allah, not a family relationship. فَ means “so,” and أَحَبُّ means “most beloved.” مَنْ means “one who.” The ending in عِيَالِهِ refers to Allah, and إِلَى gives the relationship of treatment toward those under His care.

6. Character and creation are distinct words

In حُسْنُ الْخُلُقِ, الْخُلُقِ means character; in الْخَلْقُ عِيَالُ اللَّهِ, الْخَلْقُ means creation. Do not give them one meaning merely because their unvocalized letters look alike. Teaching example: someone provides water for an animal. This illustrates attending to a creature’s need. Creation receives provision from Allah; do not turn that relationship into kinship. The report encourages kindness without this example deciding a particular person’s final standing with Allah.

7. Four responsibilities in conduct

Source: Zād al-Ṭālibīn Translation The Muslim is one from whose tongue and hand Muslims are safe. The believer is one whom people trust regarding their lives and property. The one who strives is one who strives against the self in obedience to Allah. The one who leaves is one who abandons errors and sins. These four sentences explain responsibilities in conduct. After each label, مَنْ, “one who,” introduces the action. The next four parts distinguish tongue and hand, trust, self-discipline, and leaving sin. They are not an automatic judgment that a wrongful action places someone outside faith.

8. Safety from tongue and hand

الْمُسْلِمُ مَنْ سَلِمَ الْمُسْلِمُونَ مِنْ لِسَانِهِ وَيَدِهِ. Arabic word or phraseMeaning الْمُسْلِمُthe Muslim مَنْone who سَلِمَwas safe الْمُسْلِمُونَMuslims مِنْ لِسَانِهِfrom his tongue وَيَدِهِand from his hand مَنْ means “one who,” whereas مِنْ means “from.” In لِسَانِهِ, لِسَانِ means tongue and the ending means “his”; in يَدِهِ, يَدِ means hand. Both refer to the person whose conduct is described. Teaching example: someone refrains from insulting a colleague to hurt them. Avoiding harm through speech illustrates this duty. Mentioning hand and tongue does not permit harm by another means; the explanation gives the responsibility not to harm anyone. This teaches the responsibility to prevent harm. Do not decide what is right in a particular situation from this sentence alone; this lesson has not taught the details of every case.

9. Trust concerning life and property

وَالْمُؤْمِنُ مَنْ أَمِنَهُ النَّاسُ عَلَى دِمَائِهِمْ وَأَمْوَالِهِمْ. Arabic word or phraseMeaning وَالْمُؤْمِنُand the believer أَمِنَهُpeople were safe from him and trusted him عَلَى دِمَائِهِمْregarding their lives وَأَمْوَالِهِمْand regarding their property النَّاسُ is the previously taught “people”; they are the ones trusting. The ending of أَمِنَهُ points to the described person, while “their” in دِمَائِهِمْ and أَمْوَالِهِمْ refers to the people. The bloods/lives phrase concerns safety of lives; أَمْوَالِهِمْ concerns their property. عَلَى here means “regarding.” Teaching example: people leave belongings with someone because that person does not harm them. A pleasant manner alone is not the whole description; this concerns confidence about life and property.

10. Self-discipline for obedience

وَالْمُجَاهِدُ مَنْ جَاهَدَ نَفْسَهُ فِي طَاعَةِ اللَّهِ. Arabic word or phraseMeaning وَالْمُجَاهِدُand the one who strives; here, in self-discipline جَاهَدَ نَفْسَهُstrove against the self فِي طَاعَةِ اللَّهِin obedience to Allah جَاهَدَ is the action of striving. نَفْسَهُ is the previously studied “one’s own self.” فِي means “in,” طَاعَةِ means obedience, and اللَّهِ means Allah. Together they identify the purpose of the effort. Teaching example: someone expects truthfulness to reduce personal gain but restrains that desire and speaks truthfully. Its purpose differs from working harder merely for greater earnings. The explanation emphasizes the importance of this striving; do not infer a ranking of every kind of striving from this short statement.

11. Leaving sins

وَالْمُهَاجِرُ مَنْ هَجَرَ الْخَطَايَا وَالذُّنُوبَ Arabic word or phraseMeaning وَالْمُهَاجِرُand the one who leaves; here, one who leaves sins هَجَرَleft; abandoned الْخَطَايَاerrors; wrongful acts وَالذُّنُوبَand sins هَجَرَ is the action of leaving. الْخَطَايَا and الذُّنُوبَ concern wrongful acts and sins; وَ means “and.” The explanation focuses on leaving sins, small and great, not merely changing home. Teaching example: someone moves neighbourhood but deliberately continues the same wrongdoing. Moving does not establish abandoning sin. Someone who stops that wrongdoing while staying in one place illustrates the action. This does not condemn every ordinary move.

12. A claim and its two roles

الْبَيِّنَةُ عَلَى الْمُدَّعِي وَالْيَمِينُ عَلَى الْمُدَّعَى عَلَيْهِ (الترمذي) Translation Evidence is the responsibility of the claimant, and the oath concerns the person against whom the claim is made. Arabic word or phraseMeaning الْبَيِّنَةُevidence; proof الْمُدَّعِيthe claimant وَالْيَمِينُand the oath; here, an oath concerning the truth of a statement الْمُدَّعَى عَلَيْهِthe person against whom the claim is made A claim states a right or demand concerning another person. عَلَى here expresses responsibility. In الْمُدَّعَى عَلَيْهِ, عَلَيْهِ means “against/upon him.” الْيَمِينُ here means an oath, not the right hand. This short principle identifies roles and their relationships, not a complete procedure for every case. It does not teach that every accusation necessarily triggers an oath or that an oath automatically clears every person.

13. Identify the role before its name

Teaching example: Hamid says his book is with Bilal and should be returned. In that account, Hamid is making the claim and Bilal is the person against whom it is made. The evidence relationship belongs to Hamid’s role; the oath relationship belongs to Bilal’s role. This exercise identifies roles only. Determining whose account is true or how the matter is resolved needs further information and the relevant procedure; no such decision is supplied here.

14. Mirror, brother, and protection

الْمُؤْمِنُ مِرْآةُ الْمُؤْمِنِ، وَالْمُؤْمِنُ أَخُو الْمُؤْمِنِ، يَكُفُّ عَنْهُ ضَيْعَتَهُ وَيَحُوطُهُ مِنْ وَرَائِهِ (رواه الترمذي وأبو داود) Translation A believer is another believer’s mirror and brother; he keeps loss from him and safeguards him in his absence. Arabic word or phraseMeaning مِرْآةُmirror أَخُو الْمُؤْمِنِthe believer’s brother يَكُفُّkeeps away; wards off الْمُؤْمِنُ and الْمُؤْمِنِ both mean believer here. مِرْآةُ الْمُؤْمِنِ means “the believer’s mirror”; أَخُو expresses the brother relationship. The mirror illustrates seeing a fault in order to correct it. Being a mirror means neither hiding a fault to please someone nor attacking them with it. The explanation’s aim is correction through helpful information. Next, retain the responsibilities concerning loss and absence as well.

15. Preventing loss and caring in absence

Arabic word or phraseMeaning عَنْهُfrom him ضَيْعَتَهُhis loss; waste or loss affecting him وَيَحُوطُهُand safeguards him مِنْ وَرَائِهِliterally from behind him; here, in his absence In يَكُفُّ عَنْهُ ضَيْعَتَهُ, loss is kept from the fellow believer. Loss of belongings is an illustration of ضَيْعَتَهُ; do not reduce it to poverty alone. The ending of يَحُوطُهُ also refers to that fellow believer. مِنْ means “from” and وَرَائِهِ means “behind him”; the whole expression here concerns his absence. Teaching example: a colleague is absent and their belongings are about to be damaged by rain. You move them to safety, attending to their interests rather than merely standing physically behind them.

16. The purpose of correction and support

Teaching example: a colleague records an incorrect amount. You point it out and help correct it. Praising the error merely to please them is not being a mirror; spreading it for mockery is not correction either. Care for an absent colleague includes their belongings and interests. Concealing their plan to harm someone in the name of helping a brother is not the purpose of that example. Preventing harm and supporting what is right can go together.

17. Like one person

الْمُؤْمِنُونَ كَرَجُلٍ وَاحِدٍ. إِنِ اشْتَكَى عَيْنُهُ اشْتَكَى كُلُّهُ، وَإِنِ اشْتَكَى رَأْسُهُ اشْتَكَى كُلُّهُ (رواه مسلم) Translation Believers are like one person. If his eye is in pain, the whole person suffers; if his head is in pain, the whole person suffers. Arabic word or phraseMeaning الْمُؤْمِنُونَbelievers كَرَجُلٍlike a man/person وَاحِدٍone إِنِif In كَرَجُلٍ, كَ means “like” and رَجُلٍ means “man/person”; وَاحِدٍ specifies one. The actual word is person, followed by that person’s eye and head to illustrate their bodily relationship. إِنِ means “if” and introduces a condition; distinguish it from the earlier أَنْ linking an action such as discovery.

18. Eye, head, and the whole person

Arabic word or phraseMeaning اشْتَكَىexperienced pain; suffered عَيْنُهُhis eye رَأْسُهُhis head كُلُّهُall of him; the whole person عَيْنُ in عَيْنُهُ means eye, رَأْسُ in رَأْسُهُ means head, and كُلُّ in كُلُّهُ means all/whole. The ending refers to the same person throughout. Both the eye’s pain and the head’s pain are followed by suffering of the whole person. In وَإِنِ, وَ is “and” and إِنِ is “if.” The comparison encourages care for one another’s hardship. Teaching example: listening to a struggling colleague and offering possible help expresses mutual concern. It does not require identical physical pain or emotional intensity in everyone; it is not a way to measure faith from facial reactions.

19. Recap

الْخُلُقِ means character; الْخَلْقُ means creation. Understand inward unease and dislike of disclosure within the stated limits: personal feeling does not replace clear religious guidance or scholarly agreement. Creation depends on Allah’s provision, not kinship with Him. Keep four actions distinct: safety from harm, trust regarding lives and property, striving against the self in obedience, and leaving sins. The claimant and the person facing the claim have distinct roles. The mirror serves correction, and care extends to absence. The one-person comparison encourages mutual concern. Explain each relationship in your own words and give a fresh example.
