Companion and Successor

Lesson

1. What will we learn?

We have learned the difference between a narrator, a sanad and a matn. We will now learn two names used in Hadith study: ṣaḥābī (صحابی), Companion, and tābiʿī (تابعی), Successor. Main question: Did a person meet the Prophet ﷺ, or meet a Companion? We will also learn the condition of faith, so that we can distinguish these names.

2. The example of ʿAlī

ʿAlī, may Allah be pleased with him, said: حَدِّثُوا النَّاسَ بِمَا يَعْرِفُونَ (Sahih al-Bukhari: 127) Translation: Speak to people about what they can understand. This statement is attributed to ʿAlī. He met the Prophet ﷺ as a believer and died upon faith; he is a ṣaḥābī (صحابی), a Companion. Notice: The speaker in this example is ʿAlī; do not treat these words as a saying of the Prophet ﷺ.

3. Who is a Companion?

A ṣaḥābī (صحابی), Companion, is a person who: • met the Prophet ﷺ; • believed in him at that encounter; • and died upon faith.1 Seeing with one's eyes is not required. A blind person who met him as a believer and died upon faith is also a Companion. 1. Plural form: Ṣaḥābah (صحابہ) is also used for several Companions.

4. Who is a Successor?

A tābiʿī (تابعی), Successor, is a Muslim who is not himself a Companion but met a Companion while a believer.1 Example: Ḥasan al-Baṣrī, may Allah have mercy on him, is a Successor. He was not a Companion himself; he met Companions. Difference: A Companion's definition concerns meeting the Prophet ﷺ. A Successor's definition concerns meeting a Companion. 1. Plural form: Tābiʿīn (تابعین) is also used for several Successors.

5. Faith at the encounter

Mentioning an encounter is not enough: faith at that encounter also matters. • A person saw the Prophet ﷺ but did not believe in him then. That encounter alone does not make the person a Companion. • A person met a Companion but was not a Muslim then. That encounter alone does not make the person a Successor. If the person later believed and met again, that would need to be considered separately. Here we are considering only the encounter described.

6. What information matters?

Knowing only that an early narrator transmitted Hadith does not yet tell us whether he was a Companion or a Successor. Look for these facts: • Whom did the person meet? • Was the person a believer at that encounter? • For the Companion definition, do we also know that the person died upon faith? Living in the same period, or reading about someone, is not the same as meeting that person.

7. Lesson summary

• Companion — ṣaḥābī (صحابی): met the Prophet ﷺ as a believer and died upon faith. • Successor — tābiʿī (تابعی): not himself a Companion, but met a Companion as a believer. • Meeting does not require eyesight; a blind person's encounter also counts. Remember: Merely being a narrator or living in someone's era is not enough. Distinguish the two names using the encounter and faith conditions taught here.
