Lesson

1. In this lesson

A narrator may explain a word while transmitting a Hadith. If that explanation blends into the report, a listener may mistake the two for one. • We will study an example from ‘Ā’ishah’s report. • We will define mudraj and study insertion in a chain or text. • We will distinguish giving an explanation from mistaking it for part of the Hadith.

2. Contradicting more reliable narrators

Mukhālafat al-thiqāt means that a narrator transmits a report contrary to that of a more reliable narrator. This is an important reason for a report being unreliable. This discussion has seven headings: mudraj, maqlūb, al-mazīd fī muttaṣil al-asānīd, muḍṭarib, muṣaḥḥaf/muḥarraf, shādhdh and munkar. Our focus now is mudraj. 1. Thiqah: a narrator reliable in integrity and preservation of reports. The comparison here is with a more reliable narrator. 2. The remaining names orient you to the discussion ahead; their definitions are not to be memorized here.

3. The report about the cave of Ḥirā’

A short excerpt from ‘Ā’ishah’s report: وَكَانَ يَخْلُو بِغَارِ حِرَاءٍ فَيَتَحَنَّثُ فِيهِ (Sahih al-Bukhari, 3) Translation: He would withdraw to the cave of Ḥirā’ and worship there. Narrator’s explanation: وَهُوَ التَّعَبُّدُ, meaning worship. It explains يَتَحَنَّثُ. Distinguish this explanation from the report’s own wording.

4. The definition of mudraj

When an extra word or statement is included in a chain or text and the listener takes it to be part of the Hadith, this is idrāj, insertion. Such a report is called mudraj. • Insertion may occur in either chain or text. • The key issue is that the added material is not distinguished from the original report. • In the previous example, وَهُوَ التَّعَبُّدُ is a narrator’s explanation, not a separate Prophetic statement.

5. Insertion in the chain

In mudraj fī al-sanad, the addition occurs in the chain of narrators rather than in the Hadith’s wording. • An additional narrator appears in the chain. • This addition contradicts the reliable narrator’s report. • Identify where the addition occurs: here it is in the chain. A chain is not called mudraj merely because it is longer; the discussion concerns an addition contrary to the reliable report.

6. Insertion in the text

In mudraj fī al-matn, a narrator blends a statement of his own into the text so that it may appear to be the Messenger’s speech too. • The addition is in the text, not a narrator’s name. • In the example, وَهُوَ التَّعَبُّدُ explains the meaning of worship. • Recognizing it separately preserves the distinction between the report and its explanation.

7. The ruling on insertion

Insertion is prohibited for anyone after the Companions; an explanation of an unfamiliar word is, however, permitted. In the example, يَتَحَنَّثُ is explained by وَهُوَ التَّعَبُّدُ. Keep the distinction: explaining a word and taking one’s own words to be Prophetic speech are not the same. Permission to explain does not authorize every kind of addition. 1. Unfamiliar word: a word whose meaning is not clear to the listener.

8. Distinguish report and explanation

In the cave-of-Ḥirā’ example, distinguish two things: • What the report describes: the Prophet ﷺ worshipped in the cave of Ḥirā’. • The explanatory phrase: وَهُوَ التَّعَبُّدُ, meaning worship. An explanation does not become the Prophet’s own statement merely because its meaning is correct. Here the phrase explains a word; it does not convey a separate Prophetic statement.

9. Summary

• Mukhālafat al-thiqāt: transmitting contrary to a more reliable narrator. • Mudraj: added material in the chain or text that a listener takes as part of the Hadith. • Two forms: an added narrator in the chain, or a narrator’s statement blended into the text. • The example: وَهُوَ التَّعَبُّدُ explains a word and must be recognized separately. • Ruling: distinguish prohibited insertion from permitted explanation of an unfamiliar word.
