Lesson

1. In this lesson

Study four short Hadiths about deliberation, a clean heart, injustice, and greeting first. Connect the Arabic words with their meanings. Then use everyday examples to distinguish thoughtful action from needless delay, and a clean heart from ignoring signs of deception.

2. Deliberation and haste

الْأَنَاةُ مِنَ اللَّهِ. وَالْعَجَلَةُ مِنَ الشَّيْطَانِ (رواه الترمذي) Translation Deliberation is from Allah, and haste is from Satan. Arabic word or phraseMeaning الْأَنَاةُdeliberation; acting calmly and thoughtfully مِنَ اللَّهِfrom Allah وَالْعَجَلَةُand haste مِنَ الشَّيْطَانِfrom Satan Deliberation includes acting with patience instead of anger or impatience. Here مِنَ means “from.” وَ means “and”; الْعَجَلَةُ means haste.

3. Deliberation does not mean delay

In haste, a person acts without considering what needs attention. Promptness in good actions encouraged by religion is not included in this criticism. Speed alone does not decide the issue: consider whether the action is thoughtful or impatient. Teaching example: when an upsetting message arrives, understanding it before replying shows deliberation. Sending an angry reply without understanding it shows haste. By contrast, if someone needs immediate help and you can help safely, needless delay is not deliberation.

4. A clean heart and noble character

الْمُؤْمِنُ غِرٌّ كَرِيمٌ. وَالْفَاجِرُ خَبٌّ لَئِيمٌ (رواه أحمد والترمذي) Translation The believer is guileless and noble; the wicked person is deceitful and mean. Arabic word or phraseMeaning الْمُؤْمِنُthe believer غِرٌّguileless; free of deceitful scheming كَرِيمٌnoble in character وَالْفَاجِرُand the wicked person خَبٌّdeceitful; scheming to harm لَئِيمٌmean in character The contrast concerns good and bad character. كَرِيمٌ describes noble character, rather than simply wealth or family standing. لَئِيمٌ describes the opposite: mean character. الْفَاجِرُ means the wicked person; the attached وَ means “and.”

5. A clean heart with good judgment

A clean heart does not scheme to deceive others. It does not mean being unaware or accepting every claim without thought. Thinking well of people can go together with attending to clear signs of harm. Teaching example: someone previously failed to return an entrusted item. Without insulting them or plotting against them, you clarify the matter before entrusting another item. Such care does not conflict with a clean heart. Repeatedly ignoring the same known deception is not the lesson.

6. The consequence of injustice

الظُّلْمُ ظُلُمَاتٌ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ (متفق عليه) Translation Injustice will be darknesses on the Day of Resurrection. Arabic word or phraseMeaning الظُّلْمُinjustice; wronging someone or denying their right ظُلُمَاتٌdarknesses يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِon the Day of Resurrection The Hadith warns about the consequence of injustice. يَوْمَ means “day” and الْقِيَامَةِ means “Resurrection”; together the phrase means “on the Day of Resurrection.” Teaching example: deliberately keeping another person’s property denies their right. The warning is therefore about how we treat others, not merely the word for darkness.

7. Greeting first

الْبَادِئُ بِالسَّلَامِ بَرِيءٌ مِنَ الْكِبْرِ (رواه البيهقي) Translation The one who initiates the greeting is free from arrogance. Arabic word or phraseMeaning الْبَادِئُthe one who begins بِالسَّلَامِin greeting with salam بَرِيءٌfree; here, free from مِنَ الْكِبْرِfrom arrogance الْكِبْرِ means arrogance here: thinking yourself above another person and looking down on them. Greeting first sets aside the attitude that the other person must greet you first. Teaching example: you meet someone younger and greet them without waiting for them to acknowledge your importance. Greeting once does not justify claiming that arrogance has permanently disappeared from every part of your conduct.

8. Recap

الْأَنَاةُ involves calm thought; الْعَجَلَةُ involves impatient action. Needlessly delaying a good action is not deliberation. غِرٌّ describes a clean heart, not praise for remaining unaware. كَرِيمٌ and لَئِيمٌ contrast noble and mean character. الظُّلْمُ means injustice; the Hadith warns about its consequence. Greeting first acts against arrogance. Explain in your own words: how can haste differ from immediate help? How can you remain clean-hearted while taking care? Connect بِالسَّلَامِ and مِنَ الْكِبْرِ with the meaning of the whole Hadith.
