Inherent Strength and Strengthening

Distinguish li-dhātihi and li-ghayrihi across the four accepted categories of ṣaḥīḥ and ḥasan. Read the bilingual lesson for Inherent Strength and Strengthening and test your understanding with a focused quiz.

Lesson

1. Ṣaḥīḥ li-Dhātihi

● Definition: A report that fulfils all five conditions in itself. ● Example: «سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم قَرَأَ فِي الْمَغْرِبِ بِالطُّورِ» ● Translation: I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ recite Sūrat al-Ṭūr in the Maghrib prayer. ● Reason: This report does not need another chain to meet the definition.

2. Ḥasan li-Dhātihi

● Definition: A report in which a transmitter's precision is somewhat lower while the remaining conditions are present. ● Example: «إِنَّ أَبْوَابَ الْجَنَّةِ تَحْتَ ظِلَالِ السُّيُوفِ» ● Translation: The gates of Paradise are beneath the shadows of swords. ● Reason: One transmitter has comparatively lower precision, and this classification does not depend on support from other chains.

3. Ṣaḥīḥ li-Ghayrihi

● Definition: A report in which a transmitter's precision is somewhat lower, but the deficiency is compensated by support from multiple chains. ● Example: «لَوْلَا أَنْ أَشُقَّ عَلَى أُمَّتِي لَأَمَرْتُهُمْ بِالسِّوَاكِ عِنْدَ كُلِّ صَلَاةٍ» ● Translation: If I did not fear hardship for my community, I would command them to use the tooth-stick at every prayer. ● Reason: Support from multiple chains compensates for a transmitter's weaker memory, so this is ṣaḥīḥ li-ghayrihi.

4. Ḥasan li-Ghayrihi

● Definition: A weak report whose weakness is removed through multiple chains. ● Example: «إِنَّ امْرَأَةً مِنْ بَنِي فَزَارَةَ تَزَوَّجَتْ عَلَى نَعْلَيْنِ ...» ● Translation: A woman from Banū Fazārah married for a dowry of two sandals... ● Reason: Other chains remove the weakness, so this is ḥasan li-ghayrihi.

5. Li-Dhātihi and Li-Ghayrihi

● Li-dhātihi: the required conditions are present in the report's own state. ● Li-ghayrihi: support from other chains removes an earlier deficiency. ● The four names are ṣaḥīḥ li-dhātihi, ḥasan li-dhātihi, ṣaḥīḥ li-ghayrihi, and ḥasan li-ghayrihi.

Practice questions

Question 1

What is the simple meaning of li-dhātihi in ṣaḥīḥ li-dhātihi?

  • The report itself fulfils the stated conditions
  • Only other chains made it ṣaḥīḥ
  • Its chain is necessarily disconnected

Question 2

What is the basic shortfall in ḥasan li-dhātihi?

  • There is no chain at all
  • The report is necessarily fabricated

Question 3

How does a report become ṣaḥīḥ li-ghayrihi?

  • A report in which a transmitter’s precision is somewhat lower gains strength through multiple chains, compensating for that deficiency
  • Only because its meaning is good
  • Because a Companion narrated it

Question 4

What is the basic form of ḥasan li-ghayrihi?

  • A weak report's weakness is removed through multiple chains
  • The chain of a ṣaḥīḥ li-dhātihi report becomes broken
  • Every popular report is ḥasan li-ghayrihi
