Lesson
1. What will we learn?
We will learn the conditions of mashhūr Hadith (مشہور) and the two related uses of mustafīḍ (مستفیض). A narrator is a person who transmits a Hadith. Here, a ṭabaqah (طبقہ) means the narrators belonging to one transmission period or generation. Their number is considered separately in each generation.
2. An example of mashhūr Hadith
The Prophet ﷺ said: الْمُسْلِمُ مَنْ سَلِمَ الْمُسْلِمُونَ مِنْ لِسَانِهِ وَيَدِهِ (Sahih al-Bukhari: 10) Translation: A Muslim is one from whose tongue and hand other Muslims are safe. This is an example of mashhūr Hadith. Its classification concerns narrator numbers: three or more in every generation, while remaining below the threshold of tawātur.
3. Two conditions of mashhūr Hadith
Khabar mashhūr (خبرِ مشہور) has two conditions together: • Three or more narrators in every generation. If even one generation has fewer than three, this definition is not fulfilled. • The number remains below the threshold of tawātur. Having more than three narrators does not by itself mean mutawātir. This concerns each generation, not merely finding three names in the entire sanad.
4. The tawātur threshold and ordinary fame
The threshold of tawātur concerns so many narrators in every generation that all agreeing on a lie, or all coincidentally reporting the same falsehood, is ordinarily impossible. The report must also originate in sensory knowledge, such as hearing or seeing. Mashhūr Hadith has three or more narrators in each generation, but their abundance does not reach tawātur. A Hadith being widely known today is a different matter: popularity alone does not establish its narrator numbers in each generation.
5. Mustafīḍ as another name for mashhūr
Mashhūr Hadith is also called mustafīḍ (مستفیض). In this use, both names refer to the same category. Here, reading mustafīḍ does not introduce a separate category. The same conditions remain: three or more narrators in every generation, but below tawātur.
6. A narrower use of mustafīḍ
According to one view, mustafīḍ (مستفیض) is a narrower kind of mashhūr: besides meeting the mashhūr conditions, it has an equal number of narrators in every generation. • Equal numbers: it is called mustafīḍ in this narrower use. • Numbers vary: it remains mashhūr if the mashhūr conditions hold, but it is not mustafīḍ in this narrower use. Under this view, mashhūr is broader and mustafīḍ is narrower.1 1. Broader and narrower: under this view, every mustafīḍ is mashhūr, but not every mashhūr is mustafīḍ.
7. Lesson summary
• Mashhūr Hadith (مشہور): three or more narrators in every generation, below tawātur. • Common use of mustafīḍ (مستفیض): another name for mashhūr. • A narrower use: the mashhūr conditions hold and narrator numbers are equal in every generation. • Remember: this transmission classification differs from being widely known today.
Practice questions
Question 1
If one generation has only two narrators while the others have more than three, what follows under the definition of mashhūr taught here?
- The larger numbers elsewhere make up for the smaller generation.
- It is mashhūr if the total number of narrators exceeds three.
- The generation with two means this definition of mashhūr is not fulfilled.
Question 2
The mashhūr conditions hold, but narrator numbers differ between generations. Under the narrower use of mustafīḍ, which statement is correct?
- It remains mashhūr, but is not mustafīḍ in that narrower sense.
- The unequal numbers mean it is no longer mashhūr either.
- The differing numbers make it mustafīḍ in that narrower sense.
Question 3
Match each statement to the aspect it concerns.
Question 4
Where mustafīḍ is used simply as another name for mashhūr, equal narrator numbers in every generation must still be imposed as an additional condition.
Question 5
If narrator abundance reaches tawātur and its remaining conditions also hold, why not call it merely mashhūr on the grounds that there are more than three narrators?
- Mashhūr requires exactly three narrators in every generation.
- The definition of mashhūr also requires remaining below tawātur.
- Mutawātir also requires equal narrator numbers in every generation.
