Musnad Hadith and a Musnad collection

1. In this lesson
Abū Hurayrah reports a Hadith from the Prophet ﷺ, and the chain leading to him is also given. This example teaches two features of a musnad report: a connected chain and attribution to the Prophet ﷺ. We will also distinguish a collection called a Musnad.
2. Two conditions of a musnad report
A musnad report is: • Connected: no narrator is omitted from its chain. • Marfūʿ: the report is attributed to the Prophet ﷺ. Both features are required by this definition; one alone is insufficient.
3. The Hadith example
إِذَا شَرِبَ الْكَلْبُ فِي إِنَاءِ أَحَدِكُمْ فَلْيَغْسِلْهُ سَبْعًا (Sahih al-Bukhari: 172) Translation: If a dog drinks from the vessel of any one of you, let him wash it seven times. Next, consider its chain and attribution to the Prophet ﷺ.
4. The example's chain
حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللّٰهِ بْنُ يُوسُفَ عَنْ مَالِكٍ عَنْ أَبِي الزِّنَادِ عَنِ الْأَعْرَجِ عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ Abū Hurayrah then reports that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said these words. The report is thus attributed to the Prophet ﷺ.
5. Following the chain
• ʿAbd Allāh ibn Yūsuf narrated from Mālik. • Mālik from Abū al-Zinād, and Abū al-Zinād from al-Aʿraj. • Al-Aʿraj narrated from Abū Hurayrah. • Abū Hurayrah reported the words of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. This is the example's sequence. Alongside the chain, we know to whom the words are attributed.
6. Why is this example musnad?
Two features occur together: • The chain of narrators is complete and connected. • The report is attributed to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. That is why it is musnad. The label is not based merely on the subject of the text; both chain and attribution matter.
7. Musnad and the report's status
In this respect, musnad has the same ruling as muttaṣil: depending on the narrators' condition, a report may be sound or weak. The label musnad tells us that the chain is connected and the attribution reaches the Prophet ﷺ. The label alone does not establish soundness.
8. One condition is not enough
• Attribution to the Prophet ﷺ alone does not establish that the chain is connected. • A connected chain alone does not tell us that the attribution reaches the Prophet ﷺ. This definition of musnad requires both connection and Prophetic attribution.
9. A collection called a Musnad
For collections, Musnad has another use: reports are grouped under the Companion who narrates them. The Companions may be ordered by precedence in merit, earlier acceptance of Islam, or alphabetically. Examples: Musnad Aḥmad, Musnad Abī Dāwūd al-Ṭayālisī, and Musnad al-Ḥumaydī. This describes a book's arrangement, distinct from the chain-and-attribution definition of an individual report.
