Lesson
1. Introduction
Ṣaḥīḥ li-dhātihi (صحیح لذاتہ) is a category of accepted Hadith. Maqbūl means accepted. It has five conditions. Here we will understand two qualities of a narrator: • The narrator is trustworthy. • The narrator preserves the Hadith very carefully, together with its sanad. A narrator is a person who transmits a Hadith.
2. Preserving the Hadith carefully
In transmitting a Hadith, its wording is preserved together with the narrators through whom it was received. This sequence of narrators is the sanad (سند). The narrator preserves the Hadith together with its sanad by: • remembering it very accurately; or • writing it down very carefully. Such a narrator is called tāmm al-ḍabṭ (تام الضبط), fully precise in preservation. This includes careful written preservation, not memory alone.
3. An upright narrator
Alongside the ability to preserve a Hadith, the narrator must also be trustworthy. Here an ʿādil (عادل) narrator means a thiqah, reliable narrator: one whose transmission is trusted. ʿĀdil concerns the narrator's trustworthiness; tāmm al-ḍabṭ concerns careful preservation of the Hadith.
4. The two qualities are distinct
Remembering a Hadith very accurately is one quality; being reliable in transmission is another. A statement about excellent memory does not by itself establish the narrator's trustworthiness. Likewise, a statement about trustworthiness does not replace the separate requirement of careful preservation. Keep the two qualities distinct.
5. These qualities in every narrator
These two conditions of ṣaḥīḥ li-dhātihi apply to every narrator: • Every narrator is ʿādil. • Every narrator is tāmm al-ḍabṭ. It is not enough for only one narrator to have these qualities; they are required of each narrator in the sanad.1 1. Sanad (سند): the sequence of narrators through whom a Hadith was received.
6. Summary
• ʿĀdil (عادل): an upright, trustworthy narrator. • Tāmm al-ḍabṭ (تام الضبط): a narrator who remembers or writes the Hadith very carefully, together with its sanad. • Both qualities are required of every narrator. We have studied two of the five conditions of ṣaḥīḥ li-dhātihi. These two alone do not establish that classification; the other three conditions are also necessary.

Question 4
If all narrators have these two qualities, which statement about ṣaḥīḥ li-dhātihi is correct?
