Ṣaḥīḥ li-Ghayrihi: Definition, Corroboration, and Example

1. Introduction

One narrator of the tooth-stick report is Muḥammad ibn ʿAmr. His precision in remembering Hadith is lower, but the Hadith is also transmitted through other chains. We will understand how those other transmissions strengthen a report. Here this strengthening is called taqwiyah (تقویت).

2. The tooth-stick Hadith

لَوْ لَا أَنْ أَشُقَّ عَلَى أُمَّتِي لَأَمَرْتُهُمْ بِالسِّوَاكِ عِنْدَ كُلِّ صَلوٰةٍ. (Jāmiʿ al-Tirmidhī, 22) Translation: Were it not that I would cause hardship to my community, I would command them to use the tooth-stick at every prayer. 1. Siwāk (مسواک): a tooth-cleaning stick.

3. Definition of ṣaḥīḥ li-ghayrihi

A report is ḥasan li-dhātihi when a narrator has relatively lower memory precision and the other four conditions are present. When the same report is transmitted through other chains and their support compensates for that lesser precision, it is called ṣaḥīḥ li-ghayrihi (صحیح لغیرہ). This compensation is termed talāfī (تلافی) here. The other four conditions are trustworthy narrators, no omitted narrator, no hidden defect affecting soundness, and no trustworthy narrator's report contradicting a more reliable narrator.

4. Support from other chains

A sanad (سند) is the sequence of narrators through whom a Hadith was transmitted. The same Hadith may also be transmitted through other narrator sequences. Here, support from other chains strengthens the report; it does not mean the first narrator's memory has changed. Printing the same chain in several places or making several translations is not transmission through other chains.

5. Why the example is strengthened

The relevant part of the example's sanad is: عن محمد بن عمرو عن ابي سلمة عن ابي هريرة Meaning: Muḥammad ibn ʿAmr transmits from Abū Salamah, who transmits from Abū Hurayrah. Considering Muḥammad ibn ʿAmr's lesser memory precision, the report is ḥasan; with its other transmissions, it is ṣaḥīḥ li-ghayrihi.

6. The difference in rank

• Ḥasan li-dhātihi: relatively lower precision, with the other required conditions present. • Ṣaḥīḥ li-ghayrihi: support from other chains compensates for that lesser precision. • Ṣaḥīḥ li-dhātihi: all narrators already have full precision, with the other soundness conditions present. Ṣaḥīḥ li-ghayrihi ranks above ḥasan li-dhātihi and below ṣaḥīḥ li-dhātihi.

7. Ruling and an important distinction

Ṣaḥīḥ li-ghayrihi may be acted upon and used as evidence. The point here is compensation for relatively lower precision in a ḥasan li-dhātihi report. This is not a rule that every kind of weakness disappears merely because more chains exist. Applying the classification requires scholarly investigation of the conditions; simply counting chains is insufficient.
